I've always wondered how does a job as a programmer actually looks like. Do you go to an office and just write code 8 hours a day in C / Python / (some other language) all day?

Could you give me a few examples of what you do? (I dropped out of uni where they taught programming and just wondering how life would've been after actually graduating)
#68 - angelusprimus (03/29/2015) [-]
If you are working only 8 hours a day you are either working for a shit company or its about to go down due to lack of clients.
second, if you are imagining people in suits sitting in cubicles and typing I'm going to return to shit company comment.
Most programmers I know (so pretty much everyone I work with and know) are generally dressed as "lost a client" way, except shits will most likely be geeky and they will not be in as good a shape. (ok ALMOST never)
And they work best if given freedom to be comfortable.

You can still get a job. Universities are great for networking because of job fairs, guidance from faculty, etc.

I can't talk too much about specifics. Sorry about that.
I'm also still pretty new at my current company (< 3 months), so most of my work has been pretty low key. I've written some software to automate report generation, and I've refactored a bunch of their existing code, as well as run integration tests.

I work remotely until I graduate. The company issued me a laptop, and I wake up, connect to their servers, and do my work. I go onsite occasionally, but that's not very frequent. I work for a nice company who values my schoolwork waaaay more than I do.

Most of my work is in bash/shell script, perl, or C. Some of my other co workers do work in Python. When I do go onsite, it is as you think; I am there for 8 hours writing code. I do enjoy my work. I work with incredibly smart people who know what they're doing, and I get interesting problems to solve.

nah, I'm an idiot who doesn't know more than "hello world" scripts and can't code for life

I'm glad that there are people like you who actually love coding, like you

Hey, in her defense when she said that what Marie actually deserved was to be strangled while having her eyelids and mouth stapled shut. She was obviously having a bad day and was stressed out and in came the klepto bitch haranguing her about shit that wasn't any of her business to being with.
