if you went to jail fora marajuana related crime, and marajuana is no longer a crime. then an amnesty could help you get out of jail.

but if applied to rape and murder, then thats not really a libertarian concept.

I have to disagree with you a bit because there really could be no god or gods and we are the by product of matter just zipping around doing its thing. You are right in saying that we don't have even a sliver of knowledge of what a god may be; whether the gods of the past were people from other worlds with advance technology or superpowers, because we still cannot fathom an entity of such immeasurable ability. They may be beings or just ideas, but we do recognize the power within them and admire/fear it.

I have to go for now, but I look forward to your next reply.

But in the never ending debate on if there is one true god, many or not the only thing we can do is not deny that something out there made us. The only safe option is to pick one and hope it's right. There is no debate to begin with, as I sit here with a King James version of the holy Bible I ponder if god is an extra terrestrial, l also think maybe the bible is a riddle book where god is but the Universe which may be sentient. The only wrong answer on any side of a religious debate is to say there is no god. Jaweh, Allah, Zeus or the flying spaghetti monster theirs a deity out there

I have the gist of why people go that route, but I know everyone has their own personal reason. If I may ask, what is yours?
User avatar #266 - TwiztidNinja (08/05/2014) [-]
I think it had something to do with being forced to read the bible and half of the quran (id had enough by that point) as a young child and not the idea but the being that is god disgusted me, heck when the devil is portrayed as the guy who hands mankind the key to his jail cell while all god does is kill innocent children and so on you get fairly mixed messages of what you are supposed to believe, reading that book from a blank with the innocent mind of a child gives a completely different picture than what is gained any other way of reading it (my opinion there i honestly have no comparison on it)
Kind of sickening in places to be honest, i remember my outrage when reading the first testament when it talks about stoning disobedient children to death i mean that was me it was talking about lol, you can imagine any 7 year old reading that in the good book being baffled i am sure

Honestly and it is something no one seems to like admitting, but i would love to be capable of believing there is a loving god out there that has a heaven waiting for us, but i can't, i would really like to but i just can not do it.
You know that saying "ignorance is bliss"?

You story intrigued me, so I did a bit of digging around and found this passage:

“Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgement on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” (Romans 13:1-4)

My understanding of this is that punishments were put in place by worldly leaders as a deterrent to lawbreaking to persuade people to take up lives that weren't harmful to others (thievery, conning, etc), but as we see even today, people in power, especially those who have known nothing but power, often lose sight of their citizens as people. Punishment for severe crimes become punishment for any crime, and fear becomes a way of control.
Then I look at the last line of that passage and think of people who lead rebellions against such tyrants.
Stoning, burning, drowning, quartering; as far as I've been able to discern are the ideas of mankind. Why He doesn't stop us is because we've been given the will to choose what we do and to take that would be to say "You cannot be trusted to make decisions."
That's my take on it anyway.

No shit the bible isn't evidence that God or any god exist. That's just a terribly loose understanding of that book. The Old Testament is more like a history book that tells a chronological order of events and deals mostly with varies rulers and events in history as interpreted by those who witnessed them.
The New Testament is about morals and is riddled with inconsistencies from being written by several people over several centuries, further muddled by translation upon translation.
The bible isn't something to take a convenient line for you and declare it law; it is to serve as guidance by looking to the past.
#286 - popeflatus (08/05/2014) [-]
Guidance? Like how genocide is a wonderful thing to do as described in the Old Testament?
User avatar #338 - beasert (08/05/2014) [-]
I don't know the bible line for line, so would you please give me the part in particular you're describing?
Also, I already said the OT is like a history book, and razing other cities and peoples was a common act of war for many cultures.
