I almost felt like the second slightly parodied the first. While the original was still plenty gritty, it didn't have a true-to-life sense of location and character since they still gave us beautiful actors in pristine, sort of overly theatrical settings. In the second, it's like we visited the dredges of civilization and no, not the glorified dredges of Hollywood films where every street thug and druggy could double as a model; I mean really fucked up looking people who you might actually find living in those conditions. And even though the victims are still good-looking people, I remember with one victim they transition quickly to her all gussied up and pretty as she's captured to where she's later being held by the killer and the filter combined with the lack of adornments just made her formerly attractive body look dull and gritty, like it had sucked the fucking beauty out of a form we'd normally find innately attractive. It's a fucked up film, but arguably a cinematographic achievement.
