I would like it in an RPG or an MMO setting, because it would remove artificial scaling to spell casting mechanics: if you memorize more complex spells, and are able to scribe them faster and more accurately, you'll be a better spell caster class.

well it depends how you determine the answer as there can be multiple interpretations

1 + 1 ought to be 2 so long as we are using the basic rules of like-object addition

but let's say you're only talking about the latin script written out. when added to each other, 1 plus 1 could end up being a 7, a +, or even an equals sign =

or what if the plus sign had even the slightest translational/connotational difference, like saying "what is 1 and 1"?
well that my friend could just as easily be 11

like i said it all depends on the perspective and interpretation, and it only makes sense if you know exactly what the author meant when they wrote it some 1900 years ago

it still takes some level of skill to be good at it,
i know how to beat all bosses, which items and weapons are the most powerful when used
together and everything but i still find the game hard because i just do not have a high amount
of skill in it.
#98 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
+500 hours into the game here.

The game is "fair".
The only difficulty to it is going slow, being careful and paying attention to hints, wich is in fair contrast with most games around.

If you want hard, play Dwarf Fortress.
User avatar #99 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
and like that you have lost me, why?
you claim to have several hundred hours in the game, anyone would be pro at that point,
and then you tell me dwarf fortress is the harder...yes it is but only because it is like building
a house of cards on a tight rope in the dark, possible but fuck that.
#106 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
You're hinting that Dark Souls is hard.
It's as hard as you make it. I could grind up souls to pump in Vitality and just tank through most things without doing anything particularily pro or special.
Dark Souls just doesn't hold your hand and doesn't pat you on the back whenever you do something right.

I'm not pro for the following reasons: I can't PvP for shit, i still need to look up very specific items and i get utterly bored after getting through Anor Londo.
I have however done a dual-wielding playthrough (Scimitar/rapier) or a couple of other challenges.
User avatar #112 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
compared to most games now a days it is more difficult and it is true that you can spend
forever grinding to become really op but i am saying that most people if not all are going
to find it hard for quite a while when they first get on it, all bosses have an easy method,
there are weapons that do the most dps and there are some really easy tricks but if you
fuck up even slightly then you die, which is more then most games give you.

this guy has never played the game so me saying "you will die" is very very true.
#117 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
It depends really.
I knew the reputation of the game, which is why i went very, very slowly early on.
Wich is mostly why my first playthrough took 90+ hours to complete.

Anyone going in prepared knows that they have to be careful.
User avatar #120 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
did you die a lot during your first play though or 2?
i judge how hard a game is by how hard it is on the first go though blind and how hard
it is to play when you know everything and i still rank dark souls as fairly difficult, the hardest
game i own that does not take me 90 hours to learn how to play the fucking thing..
User avatar #124 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
No, but i just went very, very slowly and carefully. I died about 3-5 times from start to finish.
But then when i got the hang of it, i did go faster.
Might help that i did go through the catacombs first and that i blamed the difficulty on "Getting used to the controls."

I learnt how to do it after about 2 hours, the thing was that i fucked up pretty hard then and decided that this is the kinda game that doesn't allow for a lot of carelessness.
User avatar #132 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
you only 3-5 times and you did the catacombs first?
no offense but what the fuck, most people die more than a dozen times and never do the
cats first, you are not even supposed to go there, this is why you are not finding it hard
because you have some talent in it.

this is like me saying, on my first play though of dwarf fortress i have never played it so sorry of my lack of info i did everything perfectly,
all my dwarfs die of very old age and i did not game over for weeks, that sounds insane.
#140 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
When i go really slow, i really do look at EVERYTHING. And after fighting the skeletons for a while and very slowly proceeding due to them getting up again, i noticed the necromancers. Everything afterwards was just finding them and killing them.
When i reached the Tomb of the Giants, i did get out of there, since i did assume i needed some kind of torch or light.

The thing with Dwarf Fortress is that there is no perfect run. In fortress mode, you'd have to read an entire wiki and watch hours of videos before you get close to making a fort that doesn't die from "natural" causes.
I highly recommend it, since it's a game with so much depth, i could walk up to a God or Deity, bitchslap them with a fish and then probably get bitchslapped back.
User avatar #143 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
you still did something 90% or more could not do,
there is slow and then there is way too fucking slow, the first skellys you fight are tough
as fuck because of the bleed, damage and how many times they get up, many people die
more then a dozen or 2 times because of shit they could have never guessed, traps, mobs
doing attacks they have never seen before, poison damage from blight town, fall damage,
getting knocked off shit is some of the most common deaths but you did the whole game
first time with 3-6 deaths...

good fucking god, this is like someone going on COD for the first time ever and in every
single match getting 80 kills 10 deaths...
#145 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
Playing Roguelikes really helps.
If you're used to the concept of perma-death, you'll easily adapt to these kinds of games.
Sen's did have me going back and forth to the bonfire tho. As soon as the first room, you could tell it was kinda trap-ridden. Especially with the swinging blades following up in the next room.

Carefulness is key in Dark Souls.
User avatar #148 - dabronydude (12/30/2013) [-]
i do admit and you can take all my thumbs,
you are one skilled mother fucker and i hope to never fight you in any multiplayer game.
#151 - kinginthenorth (12/30/2013) [-]
Multiplayer will still fuck me up tho.

In DS, everything has a set pattern and some have more patterns than others.
In multiplayer, it's all random.

Doesn't stop me from loving games like Red Orchestra, Kingdoms Rise and Space Station 13 (Another "Everything is possible" in Space)

#705 - blancka (12/16/2013) [-]
Yeah but you do stop them doing more damage. If that guy had easy access to guns a la america he could have cause much more severe problems.

Yes, people are going to be psychotic now and then. But even if it can't be stopped completely isn't it better to limit the damage they can do?
#587 - anonymous (12/16/2013) [-]
If you are talking about the Osaka school massacre, that was 12 years ago. 8 people were killed, i'm not sure if that's comparable to say, the 26 people that died at Sandy Hook. More recently a Chinese man went on the rampage with a knife in a school in Henan - there were no fatalities.
#167 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
true, but it is a hell of a lot harder to murder large numbers of people with a kitchen knife than with an AR-15
User avatar #182 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
Actually, the first shot from the gun lets everyone in the vicinity know that there's a murderous psychopath on the loose. Kitchen knives give no such warning.
#185 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
The maximum range of a kitchen knife would be less than five feet. Further, you are presuming that the knife instantly and silently kills the victim.
User avatar #186 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
A gun speaks louder than a screaming human.

Pro-tip: Use a silencer
User avatar #341 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
Pro-tip: Suppressors won't make the gun silent. If the bullet breaks the sound barrier it's still going to have a super sonic crack as soon as it exits the muzzle, witch in and of it's self is really loud.
#189 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
Sometimes. People typically listen to, “OH MY FUCKING GOD YOU STABBED ME WHAT THE FUCK BRO?!”
User avatar #192 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
People also typically listen to the report of a rifle, handgun, or shotgun. Guns are much louder than I am. I don't know about you, but if I heard either of these things I would remove myself from the situation as quickly as possible. (Run like a little bitch) But a sufficiently deranged person would just wait in a bathroom and slit people's throats and or something else similar. What I'm saying is that guns draw more attention than knives based on the amount of noise they make regardless of weather you want them to make noise or not.
#195 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
And that is a valid point. Consider a mall though, your average dude who has gone through a psychotic break and is murdering people would be better served by opening up into a crowd, which will panic and cause more harm anyway, than by standing in the bathroom picking people off.
User avatar #200 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
I'll bet you could kill twice as many people by standing in a lower traffic aria with a baseball bat or a knife than you ever could in a food court. The number of exits and the amount of cover in a mall is overwhelming. Versus walking into the bathroom and immediately being clobbered with a baseball bat. It would take longer, but who would really stop you? No one expects to meet a psychopath in the bathroom for some reason, while everyone expects to see them shooting up the thoroughfare at a mall. I think people underestimate the intelligence of a really deranged individual.
#205 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
Perhaps the mall was a bad example. The movie theater then, one or two exits, pretty much a shooting gallery.
Beyond that though you seem to be stating that no one will ever notice that everyone who walks into this one bathroom doesn't come back out.
User avatar #207 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
How long would it take for security to notice? Dad has been in the bathroom for 10 minutes. Better to check on him and figure out if he fell in or something. Walk in the door and as soon as it shuts behind you, you get a whack on the back of the head. I don't know about the malls that you go to, but in the one that's nearest to me, the bathrooms are located in side hallways, tucked behind the shops. How many dozens of people could be missed by a roving security guard?
User avatar #208 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
The same holds true for bathrooms at the movie theater in town by the way.
#222 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
A few things:
A) cameras
B) the Absolute longest would be until you have the first security guard, janitor, or employee enter that bathroom.
C)If you figure under perfect circumstances, one person every 30 seconds and it take an hour to be found out that’s 120 people. Alternatively figure the AR-15 has a fire rate of 800 rounds a minute. If it takes an average of 5 rounds to kill somebody then within a minute you’ve killed 160 people. Rounding that up because we are assuming ideal conditions and you have 9600 people killed in an hour (160*60).
User avatar #232 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
A) it is illegal to install a camera inside a bathroom
B) Are they less susceptible to being bashed in the head with a club?
C)Your logic is flawed based on the fact that no gun can stand up to being fired at that rate for more than 30 seconds or so. (the barrel would literally melt off) Also, magazine changes, also moving targets, also everyone is trying to escape, also I dare you to cram more than 200 people inside an average movie theater.
#226 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
1st part of C) is stabbing people in a bathroom
User avatar #234 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
I guessed that. The math is right, but the body of logic making up the numbers you used is flawed.
#236 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
I'm just sayin' rate matters. Both of these were assuming ideal situation. in reality it probably won't even take 5 people before somebody notices for the bathroom unless its a super sketchy area to begin with.
User avatar #246 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
Even in the best of circumstances an AR would only fire at 800 rounds/min for under a minute. Take into account jamming, (witch is unavoidable regardless of what the gun companies say) and reloading, and the fact that most public buildings have a good number of fire escapes, I still think maniac in the bathroom is potentially more deadly than maniac in the open.

I would still be more worried about an intelligent psychopath than a mildly stupid one. I feel that the weapon of choice of an intelligent mass murderer would be a blade and time, or something like a bomb. I'm just enjoying this post to it's fullest today. I'm amazed at how many people are looking at both of these guns and assuming that one is fully automatic, and the other is bolt action based on what kind of furniture it has.
#251 - pyromania (12/16/2013) [-]
Absolutely, I just happen to be of the opinion that a gun is more dangerous in general than a knife.
User avatar #258 - thelastamerican (12/16/2013) [-]
In general I would agree with you. The only thing that would make a knife more dangerous is if our murderer was lucid enough to put some thought into their crime. Humans are the most dangerous creatures because of our ability to plan our massacres.

I was nr. 18 DK and 27 Hunter on my server a few days after 5.4 hit, so really, if that happens again, i'll be able to carry through dungeons and heroics.

I know that i'll use the lvl 90-boost as many others, to see the story from both factions, instead of one.
