I also remember there was a story of a Sith Lord who lived out his life peacefully, with friends and family with his business all while having the power one would expect.

As I understand it, being a Sith doesn't mean being cruel and evil, it means being willing to do whatever is necessary to get what you want and usually the mentality of "I now have what I sought, lets go get more".
If this Sith Lord wanted relationships, he then got them, and if he felt that doing things peacefully and legit were the best way to do things, he did. He didn't deviate from my understanding of them.
After all, by doing things peacefully he had less enemies and used his power to keep those he did at bay.
