its the chair force, its like a civilian job but you get to say your in the military. i was a Marine for 4 years and hated it. i don't regret it but didn't enjoy my time in. the air force is nothing like that, people there actually enjoy their jobs. that's why you don't see many air force vets, because their still in. but i would highly advise getting your bachelors before joining that way you can be an officer and get payed ALOT for doing nothing.

Do it and we'll give you thumbs.

Real talk though, if you really want to, I would encourage you to do it. But as an implied prerequisite, you would need to abandon everything you love and break all bonds because there is no guarantee that you will come back as sad as that is.

As someone in the AF, make sure you do your research before you join. Don't ask random opinions on the internet, but actually talk to people who are in or talk to a recruiter. However, don't take everything a recruiter says to you at face value. Recruiters won't usually lie to you, but they rarely give the whole truth. They have numbers they have to meet, so they'll tell you a mixture of what you want to hear and what is right, not just one or the other. Do your own research, because it's not even close to what you think it is. The military is a lot different than most think. Two main problems I have with the military:

1) It's all very political. It's hard to explain, but it's very frustrating to deal with stuff properly, and getting in trouble over some things that aren't necessarily in your control.

2) The military has a problem with treating lower ranking people like they're still 16-17. I see new airmen come in all the time who are 26-27, older than their superiors; however, their superiors still treat them (and talk to them) as if they're a teenager. I understand there are still some people who are 18-19, and the higher ranking people don't consider them as "adults", necessarily. But when you're 22 or older, you're an adult; however, be prepared to not be treated as one.

Now, these are just my complaints. Everyone's experience is different, and there are so many benefits to the military. Health care, school, paid leave, flexible hours, etc. Just make sure it's right for you, and learn as much as you can before you join. Do your research. I hope you make the right decision for yourself, and stay well informed!

Then go for it dude. The most dangerous that will be is that you'll be out in the cold and heat.

The benefits far outweigh the (very few) cons. You get discounts at places, if you wear your uniform you get free meals all the time, at the bar you get free drinks, etc. Plus you get a pretty decent pay and you don't have to spend it on housing and food.

Depends on what you want to do. My sister is Navy, my dad was in the Air Force, and I'm Army. My sister wanted to work on reactors and ended up on a Carrier, got to see all sorts of places, like Hawaii and Dubai. My dad worked on an airfield for a few years just working on planes, never went over seas0. I'm a medic and have been to the shittiest parts of 4 countries, but have done things that EMTs in the states have only dreamed of.

More than happy to answer questions if you have them

I was wondering how's the military life. What are the pros and cons. I know that it's mostly political, but how much is one limited in advancing ranks in the forces?

User avatar
#137 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
Honestly, its a rough time to join the armed forces. The army is known for basically letting everyone in, but that is no longer the case. They expect... more. Many things that normally would have gotten a slap on the wrist is now getting you kicked out of the military. Thats a con of the new army. Another is terrible hours... You will work more than you ever have in your life. I joined late, I was already 22 and had a few labor intensive jobs. Army blew it out of the water for initial training. And if you do go the extra mile and do something like SF or Rangers, it will keep it up.

A pro is you will always look sexy with your shirt off. You just have to worry about having 3 different tan lines. Another is that you get free education. I came in with a few credits, but I'm currently about 2 classes away from my associates. And thats with me slacking off. Plus, once you get out, free school full time.

As a medic, I'm fully qualified to go out and work on an ambulance right now. I am the master of my job, and no matter what job you pick in the military, you will be the master of that job. Just try and pick something that works outside the military as well as in. I think thats a major pro, though.

Sorry, post is getting a bit long, but last thing. Go to school first. Older and wiser, I think the saying is. Go to your local college, and talk to ROTC. They pay for a good chunk of your schooling, and you go into the military as an officer. A newly commissioned 2nd Lt makes more than a retired Sgt Major of 20 years. I'm getting out in another 2 years, and going back to school. If I do come back into the service, its going to be as an officer.

Well no shit you do. Only issue is I can only handle being with most Marines so much (no offense intended to any.) and it'd probably drive me crazy with all the egos. Not that all of them are that way, but there's been a rise in Jarheads that act that way unfortunately.

User avatar
#39 - joberja (10/02/2013) [-]
Well, the Air Force has the Parajumpers, but its fairly hard to do. But they get far more medical training than you'll get in the Army, unless you go to 160th. In which case, you are offically the badass who goes in and saves special forces when they need help.

The Navy medics get more training than we do, but unless you go and get attached to marines, you are going to be bored. Hell, in the army you might get bored... Deployments are winding down. Only way to see action in the new military is going to be to go SF. And for a medic, that means Army or Air Force. If you want Air Force (the better choice in my opinion), you better be the best, because its all or nothing. In the Army, at least you'll get to do your job even if you don't get to be full blooded SF.
User avatar
#134 - commontroll (10/03/2013) [-]
That's true. I'm gonna take the ASVAB soon, and since I've got a lot of brains I know that will help them want me in, but I actually am wanting to go SF, so I'm needing to get in better shape before I take the physical. I especially need work in the push ups, always been my weakpoint, but my pullups should be just fine, as well as my running time.
User avatar
#140 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
Do a PT test on your own and see where you are. Don't worry about being too in shape, though. Basic is designed to get you there, and so long as you go straight into, say, Ranger or Airborne training, you'll be fine.
User avatar
#141 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
Besides, SF is more mental than Physical.
User avatar
#159 - commontroll (10/03/2013) [-]
Yeah, but I've heard plenty of times they will only consider you for SF if you can bust out 100 pushups in 2 minutes, stuff like that.

But, the mental part is a huge thing, I agree. And when it comes to physical, it's the endurance factor that makes or breaks you in SF training. But thanks man.
User avatar
#160 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
They have been offering me SF since I joined. I talked to one of the SF recruiters and he said he could have me at selection in under 2 months. I cannot bust out 100 push ups in 2 minutes... I'm happy with my 70 though.
User avatar
#163 - commontroll (10/03/2013) [-]
Really? Huh. Well score. Though I'll definitely have to work to get to that point. It's stupidly sad on how bad my pecs are.
User avatar
#165 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
Before I actually joined I was just barely passing. 42. I did circuit training. Run a lap around a track, drop and do 15-20 push ups. And make sure you get them every time, even if you have to drop to your knees. I ran 2 miles like that. I was down to a 13 minute two miles
User avatar
#166 - commontroll (10/03/2013) [-]
Oh wow. Yeah, that sounds like a good system. Thank you very much dude. Any other tips for the PT and such?
User avatar
#167 - joberja (10/03/2013) [-]
Eh, not really. I know there are a lot of sites out there with a few good programs that work, but in the end its just keeping consistent and actually doing the work. I would say once every other week or so do an actual PT test though, to see where you are. Its hard to improve if you don't even know where you're at. Passing for anyone straight out of highschool is 42 pushups, 53 sit ups, and a 15:56 two mile run. Just give yourself a five minute break between each event, no more, no less. If you want to max the test, you have to do 71 push ups, 78 sit ups, and run the two mile in 13 minutes flat

Probably something I haven't mentioned, I have Colitis, which the doctors are thinking it could turn to cancer or something along the line. Either way, it's a chronic disease, so I was thinking, I want to do the world.
I don't want to die young and live shitty life. When I was a little kid, I always wanted to be the hero. Hell, maybe I can turn into one now.
#148 - dandyhandycandy (10/03/2013) [-]
colitis will not get you in, you will be turned down. Any nontreatable illness will keep you out, and if you do decide to try and continue, and the recruiter tells you to lie, if they look at your med records and see it you could face jail time.
#162 - blahred (10/03/2013) [-]
Something that should not be so hard to avoid I'm hoping.

I have considered that route already, believe me.
#164 - dandyhandycandy (10/03/2013) [-]
Just avoid lying as much as humanly possible, if your colitis is an old case and isn't "recurring" you could be ok, but if you walk into the recruiter's office don't say it affects you often.
User avatar
#128 - hudis (10/03/2013) [-]
This will sound cheesy, but if you want to be a hero, get out there on the streets and try to get into work that leads to change in society for the betterment and prosperity of all and sundry. It would make a much greater difference if your heart is in it. Joining the military doesn't make you a hero, and even if people like to say that "You'll be protecting your country, son", that's not the truth. Soldiers protect their politicians' and corporations' political and economical interests, nothing more. It's not WW2 anymore, basically.

That's my standpoint, feel free to disagree.

I guess it could work that way. But that pastor is pretty much changing what the bible is teaching, and as far as I'm concerned, that's a major no-no in the bible rules. According to The Oxford Companion to Archaeology:
The biblical manuscripts from Qumran, which include at least fragments from every book of the Old Testament, except perhaps for the Book of Esther, provide a far older cross section of scriptural tradition than that available to scholars before. While some of the Qumran biblical manuscripts are nearly identical to the Masoretic, or traditional, Hebrew text of the Old Testament, some manuscripts of the books of Exodus and Samuel found in Cave Four exhibit dramatic differences in both language and content. In their astonishing range of textual variants, the Qumran biblical discoveries have prompted scholars to reconsider the once-accepted theories of the development of the modern biblical text from only three manuscript families: of the Masoretic text, of the Hebrew original of the Septuagint, and of the Samaritan Pentateuch. It is now becoming increasingly clear that the Old Testament scripture was extremely fluid until its canonization around A.D. 100

Just in case you are in the "Dead Sea Scrolls support non-change" camp.

Just saying

Hey man just some advice for the future... If a girl is stressed out there is a good chance she will miss her period. Just the thought of possibly being pregnant can cause a girl to miss.

I've had 2 pregnancy scares with my girlfriend and each time, within a day of her taking the pregnancy test and it coming out negative, she had her period.

Try not to freak out about a missing period, there are a huge number of factors that can contribute to a girl missing one. save the freak out for when a test comes out positive.
