Clearly haven't heard of the Lone Viking on Stamford Bridge
#64 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
from wikipedia on the battle of stamford bridge

Date 25 September 1066
Location Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, England
Result Decisive English victory
User avatar #68 - anonymoose (03/23/2014) [-]
Also, it was 15000 English vs 9000 Vikings.
User avatar #67 - anonymoose (03/23/2014) [-]
I'm talking about the lone viking that literally held back the entire English army of thousands of men on the bride killing everyone who tried to pass and only died because the British snuck a man down the river and stuck a pike through the bridge from the bottom to kill him.
#70 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
Thats just a myth/folk story. Do you really belive a simple man can hold down 15000 other dudes?
User avatar #128 - DrPeppir (03/23/2014) [-]
Clearly you've never seen a camper on video games.
User avatar #71 - anonymoose (03/23/2014) [-]
Yes. It was on a narrow bridge.
#93 - anonymous (03/23/2014) [-]
A later folk story has it that a giant Norse axeman (possibly armed with a Dane Axe) blocked the narrow crossing, and single-handedly held up the entire English army. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that this axeman cut down up to 40 Englishmen.
User avatar #129 - DrPeppir (03/23/2014) [-]

Thats no excuse, you know the british are famous for having longbows, why didnt they just shoot him? Or was he immune to arrows?
User avatar #89 - Gandalfthewhite (03/23/2014) [-]
we didn't have longbows at the time, that came about a hundred or two later when we took wales
#90 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
so even then, they had regular bows, they could have just walked up to the guy and shoot him from 10 meters
User avatar #91 - Gandalfthewhite (03/23/2014) [-]
true, i don't know a whole lot about the story though but i heard someone stabbed him from under the bridge he was on
#92 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
seems like a myth to me or if he really did hold on the entire english army, it couldnt have been longer than two minutes
User avatar #94 - Gandalfthewhite (03/23/2014) [-]
probably over exaggerated yeah, but in fairness it was a very small bridge where it could only be like 3 soldiers width wise and he was probably tripping balls on mushrooms
#95 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
even if the britiish attacked him one after one, how long did you think he would have held on? Face it is just a glorified pointless sacrafice, the vikings arent what you heard
User avatar #96 - Gandalfthewhite (03/23/2014) [-]
i'm not defending it, i'm just saying there was some nutter swinging his sword around for a little while who then got killed. Personally i find the whole viking-phille thing annoying, they're over-glorified bandits
#126 - spectralkestrel (03/23/2014) [-]
The Vikings weren't just bandits, they were traders and even taught the English farming techniques
User avatar #133 - Gandalfthewhite (03/23/2014) [-]
i always thought they became traders later on when they stopped raiding
User avatar #75 - anonymoose (03/23/2014) [-]
Bows are used to shoot down men in big crowds. They're very inaccurate. We're talking about real life here, not Age of Empires 2.

He may have been hit by arrows, but not fatally.

This story is accepted as fact by historians.
User avatar #82 - listerthepessimist (03/23/2014) [-]
anyone well practiced can hit a rabbit on the run with a longbow fairly easily, a dude on a bridge would've been simple
User avatar #84 - anonymoose (03/23/2014) [-]
I'm not going to pretend to know everything about this story, but mostly archers are held long behind the footsoldiers. You can shoot a rabbit with a low angle. But the archers would have to use shoot up which is a lot less accurate.
User avatar #85 - listerthepessimist (03/23/2014) [-]
true enough, but most archers also had legs which would allow them to ambulate towards the viking on the bridge for a lower angled shot.

also the bridge I assume was spanning something, which would have made flanking very simple
#78 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
>real life

And was the british army lead by King Arthur?
#55 - tylosaurus (03/23/2014) [-]
Vikings hardly ever wrote anything down. When they did, they carved it in runes and it was usually on graves.

No, the sources came from the places that they pillaged. Those describe the Vikings and they were indeed good fighters and very fearful.
#57 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
they were jsut good at attacking undefended villages and monasteries, pritty much got their shit wrecked all of the time by conventional forses

Whn king Olav went to England demanding a shit ton og gold, they sent a bigger army then the one the vikings had. The vikings asked for the money again and they would never come back to England. England knowing that they had the larger troops and had and the vikings had to cross a small passageway that only 3ish could cross at the time, they refused to pay up. The vikings then said fuck you and stormed the English troops. The vikings were victorious, got the gold and promised never to invade England again. They then went to Ireland.
#152 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
[citization needed]
User avatar #58 - tylosaurus (03/23/2014) [-]
No, not really. There are several graves in other countries, mass graves of vikings having been slaughtered. Presumably taken some from that country with them. There obviously was resistance back then. Usually, they would just have a contract with Vikings. Something like, we pay you for not attacking us kind of deal. Because it would be too heavy on the resources if they came and pillaged constantly, even if they had resistance.
#60 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
yes they were good at killing unarmed peasants and monks, everytime they encountered a real army they just GTFOd on their longboats
User avatar #63 - marioslmg (03/23/2014) [-]
Atleast they where "smarter" than the knight kind of. Instead of just charging in a fight where you know you would loose, they save themself and GTFO

No they didn't. Seriously, there fuckign life was about fighting.

There are numerous sources also describing this. Unfortunately I don't have my textbook for reference. They would fight till death and not care about torture. They were the fiercest type of warrior. Death or victory was their ultimatum.

You honestly think after several years of traveling across the sea, that they would just turn back again with nothing when reviving? Hell no. How much history have you had, dehumanizer? Like absolutely zero?
User avatar #107 - imnotkickthecat (03/23/2014) [-]
>talks about how vikings main life is raiding
>not farming 24/7 because the land is shit in Scandinavia

>says others need to learn history

Do you even try dude? sounds like you read the ragnar sagas and thats about it.
User avatar #110 - tylosaurus (03/23/2014) [-]
>Implying raiding wasn't one of the main things they did as well as farming.

What exactly was your intention here? To point out they also farmed, common knowledge? Yeah they did farm, but that's not related to whether they are good fighters or not, is it?
User avatar #114 - imnotkickthecat (03/23/2014) [-]
If they were such good fighters how did the largest army of them ever recorded (the great heathen army) lose to pig farmers who were unprepared in Anglo-saxon land?

They were ok at best fighters who were poorly equipped and smaller than everyone else because they did not have as much to eat. You are biased because you come from that area.
User avatar #118 - tylosaurus (03/23/2014) [-]
How they did lose? They went to England and a lot of them settled there.

Yeah, some of them were pretty scrawny, but that doesn't mean they were bad fighters. The sources recorded clearly describe them as fierce and people to fear. Not because I'm biased at all. Since I live in Scandinavia, it is obvious that we learn about Vikings.

Someone who shouts amerifat fuck yeah, all other places are inferor you all suck. That's hardly credible either. Call me biased, but the texts I've read remain facts. The good thing about facts is that your or my own "biased" opinion matters not for shit.
#69 - dehumanizer (03/23/2014) [-]
Actualy i am quite intrested in medival history so i do know what im talking about.

All of your sources were romantisized stories from the renisanse. They werent some fierced superhuman warriors as popular culture makes them out to be. Just rag tag groups of savage men who went out to sea inorder to pillage some unsuspecting village for easy profit. Get your head out of the clowds.

User avatar #105 - tylosaurus (03/23/2014) [-]
>Wiki answers

No as a matter of fact, not quite. The sources I'm talking about are from the viking age, not the renaissance. Particularly, there's a source from an Arabic trader describing their fierce looks and disgusting ways of living.

Sorry buddy, but if you're so interested you ought to know all what I said. You're hardly making your arguments credible when:
1. You link a wiki answer.
2. You think they just turned around in their longboats.

True, they ALSO fought unsuspecting people, but that's just part of their pillaging. They didn't particularly go pillaging just to fight worthy opponents, you know?
#153 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
they were brutal savages, overrated as fuck
User avatar #154 - tylosaurus (03/24/2014) [-]

#155 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
They were feared because of their suprized pillaging, they managed to defeat militias but lost easiliy to professional armies.
User avatar #156 - tylosaurus (03/24/2014) [-]
Yeah sure ok, we totally didn't go over this.

There were quite a lot of established millitaries back then too amirite.
#157 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
So what your sources just described what uguly pseudohumans they were.
Theres nothing badass about sneaking up and pillaging a monistary killing defensless priests.

Actualy yes, Charlamange wrecked their shit plenty of times.
User avatar #158 - tylosaurus (03/24/2014) [-]
"In the third phase between the years of 876-911, the Vikings, along with their Great Army, continued to plunder on both sides of the Channel and began to colonize England and France. They also permanently settled in lands they had raided such as Ireland, Iceland, and areas in Russia around Novgorod and Kiev. The military response from the conquered peoples varied from one ruler to another. In some places, the Vikings met great opposition from the people. After suffering devastating blows from the Vikings, the English army reorganized: half its men were home and half out on service. A new type of craft was constructed which could oppose the Viking longships in shallow coastal waters. Therefore, when the Vikings returned from the continent in 892, they could no longer roam the country at will due to opposition by the local army's counterattack. Charles the Simple, king of the West Franks, ended the Viking raids in 911 by giving Normandy to the Vikings. In return, Rollo, a Viking leader, pledged his allegiance to Charles, was then baptized, and defended the lands against other Viking parties."

Yeah uhm, think what you want. You're beyond help and sources can't help your ignorance it seems. Also note that no one ever said that they would win 100% of the fights. On the contrary I said it was the other way around too.

to cut it into pieces for you. They plundered the place they arrived to no matter if there was resistance or not. Yes, they did kill defenseless people. So did a lot of other great warriors throughout history, that doesn't make them any less strong.
#159 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
And then what? They became good white christians because their shitty tactics were no longer effective. The english army got strong and Charles the smiple pritty much made them his bitches by giving them some lousy buffer region inorder to let the savages fight amon themselves.
User avatar #160 - tylosaurus (03/24/2014) [-]
No you ignorant idiot. It is not whether the armies being strong or not here, it's about pressuure and numbers. Europe entered the middle age in around year 1300. This year is determined based upon when the vikings disappeared. It didn't happen in an instant. It happened slowly. Christianity had become huge. Opposing that would oppose not the places they were raiding, but the entire population that were christians. It's one thing to fight off the English army. Try having most of the world against you. Read some books before you try to force your opinion with unsupported arguments on to others.
#161 - dehumanizer (03/24/2014) [-]
What? Thats pritty much bullshit! The middle ages started after the fall of the roman empire, not by 1300, can you even into history?

Christianity became huge because it was better than euro peganisam and almost all of them willingly converted. No one launched a crusade against the norse because they were annoying savages. By the time europe got its shit together, the pillaging no longer worked so they had to advance.

Also calling me an ignorant idiot is very mature.
User avatar #162 - tylosaurus (03/24/2014) [-]
Roman empire fell in 1300? What?
Since you've allowed yourself to use wiki, I'll do it too to find someone who can answer your ignorance better.
"That being said, the "Fall of Rome" is normally either dated to the Sack of Rome by Alaric the Goth on August 24th A.D. 410, or the resignation of the last Roman Emperor of the Western Empire, Romulus Agustus, on September 4th, A.D. 476.

This is done by most historians because... well because most historians (at least in the English Speaking World) tend to center their history on Wester Europe. The Fall of Rome was a key event in history because most Europeans (and by extention most Americans, Canadians, and Australians) are not decended from "the Noble Greeks and Romans". No most Europeans are decended from the people that bumped into "the Noble Greeks and Romans", beat them up , and took all their stuff. It was this beating and taking of stuff, and the later Christianization of the Barbarians, that laid the foundation of Western European civilization and culture."

Whehter it's mature or not matters not. You'll find in the real world, people get to the point where they allow themselves to call someone an utter idiot, even if it's on TV because of their ignorance.
