Yes we were almost constantly at war for centuries, but that was in a by gone age where there were political tensions over rights to land and a other factors like royal family tensions - not just that 'we don't like our neighbours.' That would be a stupid reason to kill each other for. And I don't really see how that makes sense, if we knew France had fallen one of the immediate things we would do is flood the tunnel, it would be too much of a risk to keep open because it's easier to move lots of things through than by boat, where selecting a secure landing site and being permitted by weather are factors. And yes it's improbable, if there was a war at that time I'm sure it would've just been all out nuclear annihilation, but it's still a risk and we need the security against it. France didn't want it because we're never going to invade them and it's no threat to them.

To be fair I can see the point of the flood mechanism... We're an island and if a foreign invader got control of the eurotunnel and neutralised all our forces around with by air, it'd be vary easy to move vast quantities of amour through it. It's nothing personal against France, but Germany decimated our cities by launching from France when they conquered it remember. And when it started construction (the flood mechanism had to be decided upon at this point to integrate it with the construction) in 1988, there was still a lot of East-West tension and a lot of soviet forces along the iron curtain. If they managed to go what Germany did and conquer France (not that far from the GDR) then they'd be right on our doorstep. And what about India... we don't have any trade embargoes against them or anything. All I'm saying is, things are the way things are because they give us security and benefit our nation, not because we're bitter about not being the biggest empire in the world anymore. This generation never even experienced that.

A generation never experiencing something doesn't change the fact countries hold grudges. Look at post Bismark and pre WW1 politics pertaining to France, Britain, Russia, and Germany.

As far as the conquering of France goes, if Germany or Russia pulled it off there wouldn't have been a need for a Flood Mechanism. Flood is for fast acting invasions, when you are taken unaware. If France had just fallen I am sure Britain would have realized it and made other preparations. From a military stand point invading a country through a tunnel from Germany or Russia would be impossible if not improbable, even a country like Britain that had very little in the ways of a standing army.

I ended up married to my internet relationship.
#210 - blackandwhitegod (01/05/2013) [-]
In all fairness picking up women on the internet isn't hard, in fact it tends to be easier. The way I see it is every chick you pick up on the internet is like a chick at a bar, they both want the same things, require the same types of attention, and come in the same body categories. The problem with chicks who are easy to pick up on the internet is that they are usually, but not always, bat shit fucking crazy or whores. Every one I know who has had a long distance internet relationship has been dating a crazy, they are happy in said relationship but usually because they have never dated someone in a real life setting. So while I would say most internet relationships bloom between crazies, betas and crazies, and fat people I will concede maybe one in a hundred are between people who haven't been naked for strangers on a webcam, don't take all you can eat buffets as a challenge, and have never had human physical contact in real life without shouting a Japanese prefix end in happiness.
