Brilliant in his way but is no where close to the best in his field. Ask any lay person about astrophysics and they will probably bring up Hawking.

I personally enjoy the idea of idealizing people in scientific fields. Science and Learning get a bad name in many circles in America and to have a list of people who are going to work towards making the sciences more mainstream is a benefit for us all.

And, point in fact, Machiavelli should definitively be in this list. While Philosophy and Economics are seen as soft sciences they are a required and important part of our understanding of the world around us and the societies we choose to live in.
