Most countries don't pay their athletes, the athletes earn money by winning competitions and getting sponsorship, may from as young as 11 or 12, and considering some of the american athletes had been training since they were 4 or 5 years old, it's no wonder they won. What's more impressive are the part time athletes, that work regular jobs, and compete when their schedules allow them, and America entered very few of these

Hmmm... Organised religion can contain some very nice kind hearted people I would agree. I'm not exactly an expert on different religions, however, I would like to say that I think that Catholicism is highly flawed at a basic level. How can they claim that we have all sinned for being born? It's a preposterous notion. The basis of Catholicism seems to be that us humans are to derive as little pleasure as possible in life, and if we do so then we have sinned against God. Taking Catholicism in Ireland as an example... People lived all of their lives in fear of the church. It was this fear that kept the church in charge for so long and gave them so much power. Power that was regularly abused. Anyway, going back to my previous point... If there is a god who has created all this wonder for us, why the hell would he not want us to take advantage of it.

I'm not here to defend Catholicisms teachings (to be honest when it comes to them specifically you probably know more than I do) I'm just saying I think organized religion has done a lot of good for this world. I like to compare the situation to different forms of government there are some that at a fundamental level take advantage of the weak or ignorant in society and there are those that are built from the ground up to help the people and while people are flawed and make mistakes we can't live in a world with no government either. To your last statement I can't speak for what all religions believe but as for Christianity, sins in a general sense are things that harm yourself or others so to put it as simply (and honestly much to all encompassing) avoiding sins benefits not only yourself but society as a whole as well.

Look buddy, your argument is flawed to hell. States rights are not swimming pools, we can't simplify, dumb down, or turn this shit into a simple analogy.
North Carolina is the prime example here. "Banning" gay marriage was only possible through states rights. My original point is that states rights will fuck up everything. Seriously everything. Abortion, fireworks, marriage. I don't know if anyone remembers George Wallace? Who advocated states rights to discriminate?
I'm calling you ignorant because you chose to see only what you want to see.
User avatar #104 - bitzobacon (07/01/2012) [-]
taking away state rights does not hit the root of the problem. state rights are necessary, especially in a nation as large as the U.S where there are different regions can have completely different belief systems. granted I understand there are a great many things that require laws formed by a strong federal government. I just think there is a balance. but back to the original issue, I was simply stating that giving up state rights will not stop discrimination, my analogy of the swimming pool was not an attempt to water down the issue (pun intended) but to point out I don't believe the problem will be solved by such a simple solution (I have other problems with states not having rights but that will have to be for another debate)
