I am here to try and explain the biology behind scientific posts. In addition, I will create my own content teaching those interested in the subject some random topics in the vast field of biology. I'm just a call away!

I actually had one class in college that the instructor taught everything from his personal notes. I think I opened the book once the whole semester. And if you didn't take notes in class you would fail the tests. The book and the notes were presented very differently. it was horrid

When I first started as a lecturer I did that exact same thing. After a while I realised that this caused more problems than it was worth because there are certain terminologies that were used when I was a student that was not mentioned in any of the books so when I bring out my questions in the subject it was very difficult for my students to actually find anything relating to the material in their recommended reading list, despite the material actually being in the books. My first year was not a good one for my students.

hello
i have a question for you
do we have medicinexplain or do you cover that field as well?
User avatar #34 - sciencexplain (07/12/2014) [-]
Do you think you could check this one quickly and make sure everything is in check? I'm no biologist or veterinarian, so I used whatever sources I could find to build this paragraph:

Dogs are members of the Carnivora order, and whilst they descend from wolves, they are often described as either carnivorous or omnivorous. Dogs are actually able to adapt to a wide-range based diet and meat is not absolutely necessary for their survival or their nutritional intake. While dogs don't need meat but can have meat substitutes, it is recommended that because a dog descends from wolves, they are fed meat because their bodies simply are much better at processing it because that is how they are designed. They can even live from a starch-based diet thanks to a genetic adaptation, but it isn't recommended to try it. Many people say that they can't digest vegetables, but dogs can digest meat, vegetables, grains and carbs and many more foods, except for some processed sweet foods like chocolate, which can cause theobromine poisoning.
User avatar #35 to #34 - bioexplain (07/12/2014) [-]
Yeah I don't see anything wrong with that. Dogs can certainly digest carbohydrate based foods but they are designed with a carnivorous bias (their bodies are optimized to eat meat).
User avatar #36 to #35 - sciencexplain (07/12/2014) [-]
Sweet. When I get spammed with red toes because this site thinks I'm wrong for some reason, I'm relying on you to fight in my corner because I have nothing for disproving and such, whereas you probably do.
User avatar #38 to #36 - carnivora (07/12/2014) [-]
I will back you up too, trust me I am carnivora
User avatar #37 to #36 - bioexplain (07/12/2014) [-]
Of course. But if it's anything to do with physics, I am hopeless.

TFW someone else took psychexplain and got banned :I
User avatar #28 to #20 - abstractpink (07/11/2014) [-]
I was one of the three original explainers, y'know!
User avatar #21 to #20 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
No, you're kidding. Jesus, I'm sorry. Who took the account. I'm sure it's not daen who got it banned.
User avatar #22 to #21 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/11/2014) [-]
funnyjunk.com/user/psychexplain

I dunno who daen is, but whoever used psychexplain made a grave error
User avatar #25 to #22 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
But I don't see the spam
User avatar #24 to #22 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
Oh wait I see it now
User avatar #23 to #22 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
Well I remember daentraya and abstractpink (I think) used to run the account but I don't think either of them could do a bannable offence. I don't even see why they got banned.
User avatar #30 to #29 - abstractpink (07/11/2014) [-]
whoops i guess
User avatar #31 to #30 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
That's a shame. Oh well, how long is the ban?
User avatar #32 to #31 - abstractpink (07/11/2014) [-]
It's permanent. I also managed to get user o.mbra IP banned. You see, we made my big black penetrative daddy mad on /bronies/, and he banned like 30 users, me being one of them, and thus psyche died, and such.

However within an hour or two of my perma ban, a mod got me and my gf unbanned as the only ones. I think a little more people got unbanned after a couple of days, but not many.
User avatar #33 to #32 - bioexplain (07/11/2014) [-]

Weird....
User avatar #14 - sciencexplain (06/17/2014) [-]
My account may say deleted for a while, but don't fear! I've merely deactivated it since I need a break to focus on my work since I've fallen behind and I'm risking being kicked out. If you want, you can take control of the account for some time just since there will be questions about biology that I get summoned to that are better suited to you. Hope you're having fun on your holiday.
User avatar #15 to #14 - bioexplain (06/28/2014) [-]
Hello there. I've just come back and I would be glad to take over for a while. I certainly have the time to spare at the moment. I'm sorry to hear about how your work is getting to you, all I can say is that you should not let where you are going control you, but rather, you should control where you are going and don't let a job be the master of your fate. Anyway I do hope you take care of yourself, It would be awful if you are tense all the time.
User avatar #16 to #15 - sciencexplain (06/28/2014) [-]
Well it's gotten better, but only through excruciating loss of my spare time. But I'd happily let you take over, or at least the biology part since I suck really bad at biology. I would still be happy to do chemistry and reactions and whatever is my category, but if we were to do that, I would put -S at the end of my comments and you could put -B. Just a thought, since the sciencexplain account is probably more popular than bioexplain and places around #80 in comments, so the summon demands are quite high on a good day.
User avatar #17 to #16 - bioexplain (06/28/2014) [-]
Good plan. Bioexplain hasn't been getting many summons because I haven't been active much. That's all.
User avatar #18 to #17 - sciencexplain (06/28/2014) [-]
Well then, it looks like I'll have to set a new password (I don't want this account to use the password for my facebook and other accounts) and then I'll introduce you. You can check the summons and deal with all the biology, and if there's something you're shaky on, leave the notification in the notes list and I'll sift through them when I get home. I'll inbox you the password shortly.
User avatar #19 to #18 - bioexplain (06/28/2014) [-]
cheers.
User avatar #10 - megpoidgumibear (04/30/2014) [-]
can giant monsters exist, as in, 5 times the size of a whale?
#11 to #10 - bioexplain (04/30/2014) [-]
Of course! Don't know about 5 times but look at sauropods, they were the largest terrestrial animals that I know of and they are massive. There are limits, of course. Increasing size causes mass to increase by the power of 3 while muscle and bone strength increases by the power of 2, you eventually get to a point where the bones are too heavy to support themselves, now this also explains why sea animals can be heavier than land animals, it is simply because things weigh less in water. There are other factors and ways to get around this but this is just the short version.
User avatar #12 to #11 - megpoidgumibear (04/30/2014) [-]
But how do they feed? do they eat other giant animals?
or do they need so much that they have to eat more than there is?
User avatar #13 to #12 - bioexplain (04/30/2014) [-]
I'm not sure what you mean by "they have to eat more than there is" but short answer is that they eat large plants or animals or lots and lots of tiny plants or animals like how whales eat krill.
User avatar #7 - sciencexplain (04/19/2014) [-]
READ YOUR NOTES!

I summoned you.
User avatar #8 to #7 - bioexplain (04/24/2014) [-]
I'm sorry I'm quite swamped right now. I will try and be on more often.
User avatar #9 to #8 - sciencexplain (04/24/2014) [-]
It's not a problem. I can fill in for you if you want.
User avatar #6 to #5 - bioexplain (04/01/2014) [-]
Looks fantastic. Thank you!
User avatar #1 - blobboy (03/31/2014) [-]
Yo fizzle.
I'm here to make your profizzle.
Look at science/joke/pscyhe xplain's superhero profile picture, it's the theme goin on.
So, when I make yours, what color/text at the top/symbol would you like?
User avatar #2 to #1 - bioexplain (03/31/2014) [-]
Oh wow! Thanks a lot. Unfortunately the biohazard symbol and the colour green has been taken by sciencexplain and phychexplain, respectively, but I think I will go for purple colour, a double helix and text... how about "pull down your genes"?
User avatar #3 to #2 - blobboy (03/31/2014) [-]
Pure green hasn't been taken yet, just teal.
User avatar #4 to #3 - bioexplain (03/31/2014) [-]
Oh right. Teal looks like green to me. If we can go green then I would love to go green.
