I beg to differ.
It worked for China , and the Soviet Union.
Both were backwater shit-holes under capitalism , Communism however gave them the opportunity to boosts their economy and industries, until they were strong enough to compete globally regardless of economic system.

When Communism in these countries receded , it was the Infrastructure and Industry built by Communism , that made them able to be strong economies despite the system making a 180-turn.

>russia
>was a shit hole as an empire
>switched to communism
>boom
>still a shit hole

Russia has never had our freedom. Switching from one bad system to another didn't make them strong. Their economy has always been inferior. China can't compete either. However, both dictatorships have learned to allow a little capitalism to keep from falling behind too far.
#211 - anon (10/20/2015) [-]
Neither China nor Russia were capitalist before their respective revolutions, they were both feudalist. Also, between the two countries, there were well over 120 million unnecessary human deaths.
User avatar
#191 - tkfourtwoone (10/20/2015) [-]
Last time I checked the USSR died in bankruptcy. So yeah, there's your communistic economic success right there.

Oh, and China right now is more capitalist than USA. Deal with it.
#183 - yxcvyxcv (10/20/2015) [-]
woaw, hold on colleage, as someone who studies politics and economics, I would like to point out, that the reforms who put china and russia out of their desolate state came at the costs of litleral millions of lifes. You know, people. People who starved to death. A lot of them. Not good. (well you could say that this had nothing to do with communism and more with the crazyness of their leaders, stalin and mao, but still...)
Also, their are no facts who state that these countries couldn't have done this with another economic system. Besides, there are more economic systems than capitalism and communism.
#153 - montybalboa (10/20/2015) [-]

No, but I know history and basic economics, and most importantly, I'm not American, that should give you all the information you need about the validity of my education.
#161 - montybalboa (10/20/2015) [-]
Yes I am also not American, and I am studying Economic History. Can you link me the source on your claim that a) 'Both were backwater shit-holes under capitalism' and b) 'Communism however gave them the opportunity to boosts their economy and industries, until they were strong enough to compete globally regardless of economic system. '

Because Russia and China have been the pre-eminent forces in Asia for quite a while bud. And they sure as hell didn't do all that well under communism.

>I study economic-history

Golly gee , you mean like literally everyone else?
You, like everyone else, loses all credibility to me the second they claim to be an expert on the subject matter.

You are either , a Fraud like , just about everyone else, or you are genuinely misinformed.
Either way, let's start you off with Russia shall we?

" Russia was in a continuous state of financial crisis. While revenue rose from 9 million rubles in 1724 to 40 million in 1794, expenses grew more rapidly, reaching 49 million in 1794. The budget allocated 46 percent to the military, 20 percent to government economic activities, 12 percent to administration, and nine percent for the Imperial Court in St. Petersburg. The deficit required borrowing, primarily from Amsterdam; five percent of the budget was allocated to debt payments. Paper money was issued to pay for expensive wars, thus causing inflation. For its spending, Russia obtained a large and glorious army, a very large and complex bureaucracy, and a splendid court that rivaled Paris and London. However the government was living far beyond its means, and 18th century Russia remained "a poor, backward, overwhelmingly agricultural, and illiterate country." " - Wikipedia : Russian Empire - State budget

" By the middle of 1915, the impact of the war was demoralizing. Food and fuel were in short supply, casualties were increasing, and inflation was mounting. [...]
The February 1917 revolution...grew out of prewar political and economic instability, technological backwardness, and fundamental social divisions, coupled with gross mismanagement of the war effort, continuing military defeats, domestic economic dislocation, and outrageous scandals surrounding the monarchy." - Wikipedia : Russian Empire - War, Revolution , Collapse

"After the severe economic collapse caused by the war, Lenin replaced War Communism with the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1921, legalising free trade and private ownership of smaller businesses. The economy quickly recovered. [...]
Joseph Stalin abandoned the NEP and pushed for full central planning, starting forced collectivization of agriculture and enacting draconian labor legislation. Resources were mobilized for rapid industrialization, which greatly expanded Soviet capacity in heavy industry and capital goods during the 1930s. [...]
s a result, the USSR was transformed from a largely agrarian economy into a great industrial power, leading the way for its emergence as a superpower after World War II.
[...] By the early 1940s, the Soviet economy had become relatively self-sufficient; for most of the period until the creation of Comecon, only a very small share of domestic products was traded internationally.[72] After the creation of the Eastern Bloc, external trade rose rapidly. " - Wikipedia : Soviet Union - Economy

So much for how Communism saved Russia.
I'm not saying it's a perfect system, far from it, but fact is , Russia did well under Communism for the first few decades , until military over-spending lead to it's economic decline and finally the collapse.
Yet, even after the collapse the Russian federation was way better off than the Empire and paved the way for Capitalism and Putin's reforms.
#257 - montybalboa (10/22/2015) [-]
I did sorta ask for sources, and if you've been in an academic environment, which I assume you have to have been to make such huge claims as you did in your original comment, you probably know that wikipedia is not a valid source bud.

If you think me saying that I'm studying Economic History is the same as me saying that I'm an expert on the subject, then you have obviously never studied this topic academically. The more I learn about this topic, the more I realise how little about it I know.

Well firstly, calling the economic system of Russia before their revolution Capitalism is pretty incorrect, so your first claim of 'Both were backwater shit-holes under capitalism' I will just choose to ignore.

'Russia did well under Communism'; compared to whom? Compared to its closest rival, the US? Not nearly as well. Also you seem to be glazing over the millions of deaths that collectivization caused.

Sauces please, because in my study the general academic consensus is that Communism in Russia was a failed experiment.

Collectivization worked grrrrreeaat!

Regarding Russian industrialization, it's almost like a rural, backwater nation was 2 or 3 decades late to the industrial revolution. What a surprise! The USSR was in nearly the same position as the US after WWII, yet the capitalist policies of the US vastly outperformed their communist counterparts. By looking at the net immigration to and from the USSR and the US, it's pretty easy to see which policies were more successful.

Why is someone loosing all his credibility when he studies economics (I do too, )
It is absolutly true that alot of people who are claiming that they are experts are talking nonstopp bullshit, but these are the media whores, not the ones who are realy trying to understand better economics.
(Which we dont realy do. realy, most of the things we "know" are based on a hell lot of assumptiums, which is why we cant predict shit.)

To be honest, I am realy a little bit upset, that by trying to understand something better, you loose your credibility. Whoaw, please explain that.

Also, to russia, and I wrote that before: The "reforms" that made russia and china to the powers they are today cost millions of peoples lifes. Which is one of the reasons people dislike communism so much. They think something like that will hapen to them too. That it had probably more to do with the crazyness of the stalin and mao than with the economic system doesn't bother most people. Also, their are is no proof that these countries could'nt have make these reforms with a different form of economic systems. The problem was more that no goverment before was willing to do the right reforms.

They reminded me of the anime Clannad, which is the sole reason I decided not to watch anything that has drama in it.
Maybe it's because I was younger when I saw it, but so many feels were had, and in some aspects it hit really close to home.
Shit I'm getting sad just remembering it.
