also, your nose is your best friend here. if your still is infected it will reek of vinegar. some time you may smell rotten eggs from the still, you can give it some nutrients and oxygen to make it stop, and the yeast will eventually eat the sulpher and kill the smell.
and if you taste the mead before it's ready, you are liable to get a nasty stomach ache. instead put it in the fridge for a day before trying, so the yeast are not working.

That's actually cool, I've been brewing my own simple wines recently. I want to branch out to making some dry meads and "exotic" fruit wines and eventually to distilling my own gin.

try homebrewed malt beer. When you had one you wont need another, + you wont get hungry for the next 2-3 hours. And when you didn't think you could get it any better, if you go to sleep after. you will sleep like a child.

well I just let it go on until its finished, it depends on the sugar amount and yeast.

for some countries it's worth it to brew your own as taxes increase the cost of buying beer greatly, while in european countries like germany, the commercial beer is good and much cheaper that homebrewing will end up costing more.
but you can always improve your own recipe, and become better.

The start up costs can get pretty crazy. Tubing, stainless steel drums or glass carboys, yeast, materials, airlocks, kegerators, etc. can make it really intimidating, but each batch costs a lot less than what it costs to buy. Eventually your savings will outstrip the costs of startup and you will save a lot of money in the long term since everything is reusable, even the yeast.

Conversely, you can ease into it; buy a couple of glass carboys, one length of food grade tubing, a funnel, and the ingredients and you can make some decent beer right there. Might not be award winning, but it'll be decent.

i have no idea is this post is legit. But i brewed some bockbeer myself. Bottled it a few days ago.

The thing is, i let the fermentation going to long didnt have proper bottles to bottle it and a strange white layer of what looked like peeled off paint floated on top of the beer. I didnt tap that part out but i have no idea what it is.

that is most likely just yeast, but try to smell it, if it smells alright and taste alright. it's probably alright. the beer on the left is actually already bottled but they got too old, and the yeast died as a result, which mean the flavor died with it. i was forced to dump the leftovers.
