If you have even the slightest knowledge about tactics, you should be able to defend a settlement against a much larger force. Because of this you are actually able to fend off most attackers early in the campaign by fighting battles yourself and not auto-resolving. This makes playing as the WRE a lot more tolerable.
Another strategy is to pull all your forces back to Italy or Spain, let everything else fall apart while you consolidate and stabilize your small part of the empire. Eventually you will be rich and powerful enough to expand back out again, and when that happens you've pretty much won the game already. Just keep going and eventually you'll triumph.
