Currently expanding on rome in my advanced western civ class like it was being taught by hardian himself.

Backstabbing and cut throat politicians (both figuritive and literally) was the biggest downfall of rome.

Nero fucked shit up, they tried fixing it, did so ok, then poor leadership fucked it all up.

But when your entire society is efficient mainly due to conquest and sacking other nations for wealth, its only a matter of time...

What did Nero do to fuck it up? BTW Nero was nowhere near the Rome when a lot of it burned, although people blamed him because they didn't like him and then some guy rumored that he had been "seen" playing a lyra and singing while the city burned. In truth he was out of town.

Taxed the shit out of his subjects, almost completely bankrupting rome to build his own personal palace, letting his dillusions of his mother (that he killed) almost leave him unfit to rule.

If you want i can give you actual sources when I'm not dead tired. Studying my ass off for my mid terms tomorrow x.x

Let's not forget how he made a radical law making most of the richest people's inheritance fall on to the emperor apon death, and suddenly rich nobility started dropping like flies

Yea, dude was a tyrant.
I know they used mercury in thier shit, but they had strange luck with rulers.
Either they were great or terrible.

Compared to the greeks, babylonians and even persians their government wasn't very stable.
And besides engineering and architecture, they didnt really do anything besides act superior to others.
Greeks had philosophy and history from anthens and military from sparta, persians had trade, religion and ethics, phoenicians had advanced boats, papyrus, and further developed languange (that the greeks would then steal).

Rome basically only got to where it was because it was initially a safe haven for run away slaves, pirates, and others with no where to go, thus brining culture and engineering from other regions, but they didn't really expand on it unless it specifically had to do with war.

I feel thier society was doomed from the beginning.

Rome did not expand apon it unless specifically to do with war?

i wanna say that is categorically false, the roman empire made a lot of cultural and technological advances, and even ideas, i'l just leave a short-list

for starters, our calender is of Roman design, the julian calender is the basis of what we still use today(later improved into the gregorian charecter as the year was split into days and monnths with greater accuracy than any contemperary civilizations

Basic Architecture for planned cities: The very idea to create a city with a design with mind, to map the plans on a grid is a process truly established by Rome

Aqueducts. One of the cleanest water source technologies of their era, straight to the cities, while looking absoloutely gorgeous

Sewers and sanitation. The very concept of keeping a sewer for sanitation purposes would not appear until well into the victorian era, almost 1500 years later

"All Roads Lead To Rome": this phrase exists because once, it was basically true, an entire system of roads, spanning between the north of france, and leading all the way to turkey, and spain. A marvelous achievement

Medicinal Surgery: Sure, what the ancient roman equivilancy of Physiscians would be cracks, but if you wanted a surgeon, you would trust a Roman era far more than you would one from the Middle Ages.

and another thing that is a roman invention, something that today forms as the core material for our urban enviroments : Concrete

It's true that the roman ships were based off of pheonician, their fighting formations were originally grabbed from the greeks, and later involved as they were forced to deal with the native Italians, in that hill covered terrain their tactics adapted to that off their foe

And that's a strength, not a weakness. If i learn from my enemy and adapt his strategies and his ideas to suit myself, that makes me stronger.

If you truly belived Rome's cultural and technological influence was minimal, i beg of you to learn that great history, because if you don't belive Rome to be one of the significant influences of Western culture, you're entirely wrong

Attributing the fall of Rome to a single cause is just silly and misinformed. It was huge and well-established. Obviously nothing lasts forever but it still took a lot to take it down.
#28 - anon (10/19/2016) [-]
Its likely right that it cant be attributed to one thing but I feel strongly we cant ignore the migratory Germanic tribes sacking the city of Rome and occupying much of its territory.....I feel that was one of the key moments things went south

true, and people forget that the eastern half of it lasted about 700 years longer or so, so that's something.

Walls are usually just one color through and through, if this picture were taken horizontally that would be an irregular wall - seeing that the surrounding walls are white.
Also there is no railing
