That's the gist, isn't it? The primary function of life is to acquire energy. Sleeping just wastes hours that an organism could be collecting energy.
I can't back this up, but sleep could be a sort of remnant of our very earliest microscopic ancestors, the plankton. They gathered energy from the sun, but when the sun was out, they needed to survive the night until the sun returns, so powering down while the sun isn't present uses less of your energy supply, so that you survive the night.
Later life got more efficient, but the dormant period hasn't evolved out yet, possibly because the human brain is so biologically expensive, and while other animals might not sleep as much as us, we still need the sleep not so much to survive as to... one could consider it a tax of time on the biological luxury that is the brain.

The most necessary function of sleep is to give the brain time to relax. Constant activity in the brain can lead to repeated malfunctions...just like running a computer a load for days on end. Eventually something will get a little fried by the high amounts of electricity constantly pumping through it. It also gives the heart time to relax, which allows us to live 18% longer than we would without ever sleeping.

I didn't expect this kind of feedback, you're right. I'm not saying there isn't benefit in sleep I'm only saying it's not necessary. I don't believe it benefits the brain in the way you say but the heart it does and you could just substitute that with a better lifestyle so it doesn't have to work so hard. Regardless, the sensation that we call tired is due to hormone imbalance in the brain so the regulation we recieve from sleep would be that benefit, but that can be substituted too. It obviously wouldn't be easy but if we understood that imbalance more we could eradicate the need for sleep.
