me and Indonesia are from Indonesia, however from my past chats with him I can see or guess he's from Jakarta (aka the capital) (not sure if that's true but ah well). I live in a lesser city, Surabaya. However, I can compare what I have seen from my past travels there, and also several other places.
First!: First Impression
Jakarta looks like what would happen if you mix overcrowding , Traffic jams, and metropolis, being the capital and all, it's kind of easy for everyone from all over the Islands of Indonesia to haul the fuck there. Consequently, housing and lands are over-the-stars expensive, so mid-class people sleep in Bandung, a rather far city but has far cheaper housing and poor people that can't afford modern housing live under steel plank camps or near open sewages. also take note that being positioned on an island, you can't easily make underground stuff like catacombs or bunkers there, so yeah, more expensive stuff.
Surabaya It should remind you of a mix of suburban and urban West Coast (considering you're American), as it is positioned on the Java Island which also has Jakarta sitting on the other side. It isn't that noisy as in West Coast, but the amount of plants set by the city government sure is a nice touch to an otherwise busy city
most place else those are just great for mining/woodcutting/farming. Except for Bali Island, which is basically cheap tourism spot for Aussies.

Adding extra info that some Islands are connected with some religions, such as Bali being predominantly Hindu and Lesser Sunda Islands being connected with Catholicism (Jesuits!). It's kinda hard to explain why without looking at history.

Second: Religion!
We have separation of church and state which works better than any first world countries would admit, with all fuckups and hate for particular religion (Christian hate in the west seems kinda bad to me). There are 6 religions confirmed by the government (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Cathodox, [other] Christians [which includes Mormonism and Jehovah's Witnesses. Wut.], and Confucianism.) everyone is told to shut the fuck up and religious discussions are only per-religion in here. And no, nobody has the guts to throw the first holy hand grenade here.

Third:Economy!
Stuff is going to be expensive if you aren't anywhere on Java or Bali, because shipment method is still barbaric (with inferior cargo boats and all), nevermind that you're closer to Mainland Asia than Java, nope, gotta pay extra.
Which is probably why everybody flocked the fuck to Java, being the most populous island in the world and all. This creates even larger economy disparity, with Jews being Jews and taking good goyim's money and everything while college students survive on instant ramen and rice.

Fourth: Racial Problems!
not that much of a problem here, with thousands of ethnic difference and shit like that, we manage to get on it pretty well. Except for the stereotype that Chinese people get all the great jobs while indigenous people can only look up in envy. It's become a pretty great problem, since the Chinese has *ahem* "superior" intellect and prowess that they get all the jobs, all the money, and so, all the taxes (huh) that colleges have to limit the amount of students that look Chinese, nevermind how many generations they have been banished out of China.
