Not sure why people are thumbing this down. Say what you want about the rest of the computer, but the magnetic power cord is the SHIT.
Honestly I've been pissed at windows for not adding that or at least some kind of plastic release that functions the same way for ages. Like it's basic engineering to create something that resists a force that might break it only when it's supposed to, and to just release if that prevents damage.
Instead they just try to build the whole computer structure around resisting crazy hard pulls from there (which IS more expensive in design than the magnets, btw), and is idiotic and inconvenient.

Implying that Microsoft (because Windows is an Operating System, not a company) has any input on the physical design of laptops other than their own and its their fault they haven't used a design that's patented by Apple.
As for other methods of securing the cable, completely agree. Even if its a clunky as all hell solution like what VGA and DVI have, why not? Displayport and SATA are the shit when it comes to locking connectors.

No, it more likely boils down to things like how much you have to travel with it, the awkward places you have to use it from not having a table or desk, and most of all...
AND I MEAN MOST OF ALL:
LITTLE. KIDS. Also pets. No matter how well placed the cord is, they'll find a way to trip over it. Guaranteed. It's like fucking magic man. No idea how they do it sometimes. I've even had that happen with cords that have the professional cord cover shit over it. Plus, a plastic release thing or a magnet is only gonna be like 1-5 extra bucks. In other words, worth it for the vast majority of people and laptop models.

There are ways around patents, sure, but look at the Apple-Samsung legal war that's been going on for the last, what, three years? I doubt many manufacturers want to deal with that.
Besides, by the time the plug or socket breaks, the next model of that laptop or other laptops will be out, and what do the people of modern western society typically do when something breaks? They buy a new one. It's in the OEM's best interest to continue using the conventional, flawed charger to increase the chances of their customers buying a new laptop.
I did see a third party charger once though, for the ill-fated HP dv6000 laptop, that had a secondary plug in its wire. It was abnormally loose, and if pulled, would slide out long before enough force to move the laptop was applied.
