Except most compilers tell you the line and what set off the error, and that can easily be fixed with the find and replace tool most decent text editors have. Text editors specifically designed for coding might even point out the problem as soon as the file is opened.

Really this is narrowed down to in graduate school. Im currently in undergraduate school for bio medical engineering and i intern at a prosthetic clinic. However graduate school prosthetic education just focus's on the clinical end. Before you think that prosthetic is giving people cool robotic limbs and going all deus ex, prosthetics has a grim reality. That the majority of people who have prosthetics are just diabetics. People who live so terribly that their own limbs died just to keep the heart going. We occasionally have a normal human being who just got unlucky and they are nice to work with. It you dont believe me look up the location of prosthetic clinics, they are usually near low income areas where obesity is the highest. If you want to work on advancing the field and work on concept stuff(like i want to do), you are probably best off working at a university or a private company (check out darpa) which will fund millions into cool projects for military contracts.

As Willhelm said, it's a combination of different disciplines.
I am currently learning to be a Mechatronics technician(Technical Highschool) and I start college next year to become a Mechatronics engineer. Mecahtronics has a branch called Bio Mechatronics that partly deals with these kinds of projects. But, again as Willhelm said, projects like this require more that one type of engineer.

I'm doing a masters thesis related to this. It's on digital signal processing (DSP) for brain-machine/brain-computer interfaces. It's not an all inclusive list but to make something like this you need to know areas of electrical engineering including control systems, DSP, sensors/actuators, and microcontroller programming; areas of mechanical engineering like dynamics, solid mechanics, materials, and again control systems; some anatomy/physiology and neuroscience; and areas of computer science including machine learning (neural networks, genetic algorithms, and/or bayesian networks).
I did a biomedical engineering undergrad and learned most of these topics because of how I structured my course work. Now I'm doing an electrical engineering masters.
By the way robotics is really mostly control systems and can be done through either electrical or mechanical engineering departments.
