There were... two or three episodes I think after a big thing where Brian "dies." The other dog is a stereotype of some place, but I forget which. He was actually a pretty amusing character from what I saw up until the last episode he appeared in where they turned all his negative attributes up to the max. Like he just says stuff like "I don't understand what you just said, so I'm going to go beat up a sandwich." Before that episode, he was pretty good.

But the last episode he appears in is also the one where Stewie goes back in time and "fixes" Brian's death, effectively saving his life and thus preventing the family from getting a new dog.
