| I'd say they're more Gothic Dark Wave. (all of these underground electronic genres are confusing as fuck anyway) I feel the urge to be a music snob now, so you don't need to read this, but you might find it interesting and educational. To be precise, their first album, Child of Glass, is a total mix of darkwave and synthpop. Anything that comes after is a futurepop/darkwave until the Dancing in the Lights EPs. From that point on, Blutengel went full-blown futurepop. Darkwave actually is considered to be gothic as long as it mainly involves instruments, but Blutengel has always been nearly fully electronic. And futurepop is a fusion genre of synthpop, trance, techno and EBM. This is why they can't be considered gothic. Actual gothic would be first/second wave gothic rock bands like Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Fields of the Nephilim. The first wave of gothic rock is softer, slower and less heavy, like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The second wave is more hard rock oriented but doesn't actually get very close to gothic metal (I'll get to that later). Bands include Nosferatu, Fields of the Nephilim and The Sisters of Mercy. Third wave gothic rock is actually more electronic-oriented. A great example of 3rd wave gothic rock is Fear Cult. Furthermore, there deathrock and darkwave fall under the gothic umbrella, as well as a lot of post-punk (but not post-punk revival!). Deathock would be bands like Christian Death, 45 Grave and Skeletal Family. And prime examples for darkwave would be Clan of Xymox and Black Tape for a Blue Girl. As for gothic metal, a lot of oldschool goths agree it isn't able to bring forth the dark atmosphere gothic rock, deathrock and darkwave bear. It's too hard, fast and evil sounding. Yes, too evil, what do you know? Gothic is actually pretty relaxed, melancholic and artsty. I hope this helps. I've been into the gothic subculture for a couple of years and at some point I think I could consider myself to be an oldschool goth. So you can say I did my research. | ||
