it seems i wasn't clear on this, but my biggest issue was counting 1 piece of HDMI port.
sure the box is intended to take a bite out of the console crowd, who will only use 1 TV, but 80% of the setups you see at LANs are dual screen. and i assume a few of the ones who go for a single screen left one at home.
that means that the enthusiast crowd won't be interested in steamboxes.
and there really isn't a reason for anyone else to be either, there is nothing special about the hardware, and the software is going to be availible for every hardware.
the box does nothing that a regular PC can't do, while a regular PC can do what the steambox can, and more.
as mentioned, the OS is interesting, as valve reports they get 20-25% performance increases with it, before optimization, and the steamtroller looks to bring better precision to the couch.
but the box is bait for people with brand loyalty syndrome

a price of $550 to $1500 is to be expected.
this is not including the stream boxes, that most certainly will be cheaper, but who also need another machine to play the games.
these prices are common for the low/med range and up to enthusiast tier. i don't see valve doing the typical thing to do with consoles: selling at a loss, excpecting sale of games/online features to pay the cost. Gaben often speaks about the users knowing the right price of something.

The steambox isn't FOR enthusiasts. It's for people who are too stupid to get into pc gaming without it being spoonfed to them.
If you're going to do lan parties, then put it in an itx case. You're right, steamboxes won't be as capable as a regular pc, but that's because regular people aren't as capable as enthusiasts.
