Herd mentality, assuming they see what i did they will feel it's the right thing to do also. There's some good odds that by pulling the lever i'm only killing 4 people.

but also in a situation like this, there is a very high chance where one of those people will crack under the pressure and often make no decision at all, fearing both outcomes, but that is only if you want to bring real world variables into it, and if you want to bring those in you also then have to bring in the fact that one of the levers may be stuck, or one of the pullers may not have the physical strength to move to lever. Then there is also the problem with visability, as the guy 2 people behind you won't be able to see your decision, meaning he will have to base his decision off of the guy in front of him and not yours, and if he knew that there are 4 levers but can't see you or your decision there is a chance that he may think that each of the levers had a diffrent outcome (i say may only because some people over think problems like this). look all im trying to get out of this is that the human element can't simply be chalked up to herd mentality and there are other variables to consider.

But if those other people see the train, they know what choice previous people have made and are more likely to pull their lever.
If it's a 50/50 chance for the first guy, it's actually be like a 90/10 chance for the last guy - other people have already made the decision for them.

So you saying the men pulling levers 1, 2 and 3 should be held responsible (morally or otherwise) for the actions of the man who chose not to pull lever number 4?

seeing as how these are hypothetical human lives, being held responsible and blaming others should be secondary in thinking about the problem, unless you are focusing about your hypothetical self in this problem. and so what i am saying is that you, at the start, have to make the decision that no matter what will result in the death of no less than 4 humans. on a side note what would happen if one of the levers were stuck or if the person at the leaver didn't have the physical strength to move it? but back to the question. this question is designed to have no right answer, as no matter what it will result in death of others.

Even worse, apparently you the nr.1 should be held responsible for the actions of everyone else.
