The rich get richer, and the poor, poorer. That's how it rolls here. My dad's a very successful businessman, so we're lucky enough to be quite wealthy. But yes, the gap between the rich and the poor is tremendous. One way of knowing a person is well off and given a proper education (unlike 90 percent of the population), is through their English speaking/writing skills. Surprisingly enough, though, a lot more people are becoming successful nowadays.
