the acting was actually very good.granted anakin was rather painfull and considering the dialogue even the infamous christopher lee seemed to be rather corny actor from time to time.but specially obi wan and the emperor were portrayed very well.mace was great too thou a tad awkward in some times
#35 - auryn (05/11/2014) [-]
Exactly, the actors did well considering what they had to work with.

Although the entire character of Mace Windu was unnecessary and felt a bit out of place and the, in my opinion, miscasting of Samuel L. Jackson (Not really the suitable for this kind of reserved role) is just one big commercial gimmick.

samuel pulled out a role of a wise but extremely powerful person. true he was acting out of his comfort zone but i think the role was pretty darn good.

Man of steel, the dark knight trilogy or at least the third one, the green lantern movie...
#58 - auryn (05/11/2014) [-]
Neither were as highly anticipated or were as bad as the Star Wars prequels.

I think I speak for most cinephiles when I say the prequels have to the most disspointing thing to hit the cinema, or at least closely tied with the 2008 movie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"
User avatar #62 - huntergriff (05/11/2014) [-]
and i meant to write addition, not edition.
User avatar #61 - huntergriff (05/11/2014) [-]
I disagree. I think it's pretty much the fact that most people who say the prequels suck do so because they watched the original trilogy first, and I mean the people who watched the OT in the years before the special edition was released, then were blinded by the nostalgia as soon as the new movies came out, and now they sit there bitching and moaning about how the prequels are fucking terrible and refusing to even acknowledge them or the special editions. Same thing happened with Halo and I guarantee you that the same exact fucking thing is going to happen with the sequel trilogy. As I said in one of my comments, the prequels were a necessary edition to the saga, had they not been made, we would have never gotten answers to many of the unresolved plot points created by the original trilogy, such as why vader's in the suit, or what the clone wars were, or how the empire came to be.
#65 - auryn (05/11/2014) [-]
George Lucas had this fantastic alternate universe and framework to work in to start with with plenty of potential, I don't believe he could possibly have screwed this up more than he did.

And regardless of the original trilogy, the prequels are terrible as stand alone movies.
Just look at the storywriting, the characters, just basically everything that is about substance, It's sub-par in every department beside the superfical things like special FX, sets, costumes and make-up.

User avatar #69 - huntergriff (05/12/2014) [-]
also, and this thought just occurred to me, but by the time episode 1 came out, the EU wasn't as prominent as it was after episode 1. In fact, most of it never referenced the clone wars, and the only things that did were a marvel comic which was, at the time, considered S-Canon, or secondary canon (this basically meant that nothing in this category was canon unless it's mentioned in a higher work), which placed Boba fett in the clone wars as a soldier fighting against the republic, and I think dark empire only slightly touched up upon it.

Honestly George didn't have that much to work with, since the EU Basically just consisted of stuff after return of the jedi and in between the original three movies.
User avatar #66 - huntergriff (05/11/2014) [-]
>George Lucas had this fantastic alternate universe and framework to work in to start with with plenty of potential, I don't believe he could possibly have screwed this up more than he did.

George is...a very very very stubborn man.

User avatar #22 - wotterpatch (05/11/2014) [-]
Episode 7 soon. My only hope is that it's funny, because it's gonna suck either way.
#25 - auryn (05/11/2014) [-]
Why would you say that?

I think J.J. Abrams has proven himself a very competent director and writer. He might just be the man for the job.
The entire problem with the prequels was Lucas's autocracy, George handing over Star Wars is the biggest blessing it could get.

After hearing Abrams talk about his feelings on Star Wars it tells me he gets it, and his style of film-making could suit it very well.
The optimist in me feels he's capable to recapture the integrity of the original trilogy and make it the space epic Star Wars should be. (I mean 'epic' not in the informal way, but as in a Homeric heroic journey)

Even if it wouldn't be near to the big potential the franchise lends itself to, it could still very well be decent movie.
I have no reason to believe it's going to suck.

I don't hate the prequels.
Not as good as the original, but the prequels weren't that bad.
I am ready for the rage of FJ.
#21 - auryn (05/11/2014) [-]
Yes, they were.

Boring flat characters, emotionally unconvincible, and relationships all implied not actually seen.
Awful dialogue, inchorent, unnecessarily complex, illogical story full of plotholes, everything feels like / is a plot device.

The list of contradictory and things that simply didn't make sense is neverending.
It's like a 10 year old made everything up on the fly and they deceided to go with it.

I guess this is what happens when George Lucas with complete control is surrounded by a bunch of yes-men that don't question him creatively, having his finger in literallly everything.
A commercialized mess where they tried to shove in as many shit and tricks as they could for mass-appeal, with a movie tone going to lamenting of death and beheading to slap stick comedy to cheesy soap opera-esque romances in matter of minutes, no seconds, combined with everlasting meaningless slick action that's devoid of any suspense.

I could go on forever.

I'm a big movie fan and have seen a lot stuff but this is definitely high on the list of incompetent film-making.
I feel sorry for the people who spend the countless of hours doing the make-up, costumes, sets, special effects and music, being the only thing good about the movies.

As much as I try to like them, I can't. The only redeeming factor is that lightsabers and jedi's remain an awesome concept, despite of the prequels.
