There is no such thing as "western anime". Avatar is a western cartoon. Now, don't get me wrong, i think Avatar is fantastic and i am in no means insulting it in anyway, but that's just how it is. If you went by that logic, many anime series and slice of life anime would not be considered anime by your definition. Cartoon means animation of any kind, not just western.

All anime are cartoons but not all cartoons are anime.

Let me run you a hypothetical regarding my definition of anime and cartoons (which actually isn't "mine").

If Spongebob Squarepants, a Western-made cartoon, were redrawn with a modern anime aesthetic, would it suddenly be an anime?

Another:

If Clannad: After Story had the visual style of Family Guy (perish the thought), would it no longer be an anime?

And one more:

Perhaps the many slice-of-life series, and other sporadically constructed series, that you're referring to are, in fact, cartoons? Surely we can't call them anime solely because they were made in Japan. Also, I'm curious as to what shows you're referring to.

#86 - astriatus (11/27/2013) [-]
You're right to point out that the dead are unaware of their position, but there are two caveats:

1) The dead student must be a late student or resident from Yomiyama. Seeing as how I've lived in the states my entire life, I couldn't be the dead one.
2) There is a 100% chance that I would befriend Mei Misaki, and her unique eye would answer anything regardless.

I would argue about Railgun because they are clones of each other but some are reffered to as "notable clones" instead of the plain "clone", as they have different personalities and interact with other characters differently.
I'm NOT saying you are wrong, just not EXACTLY CORRECT.

Stein's Gate is excused though, as it has to deal with Time Travel and you cannot have a focus on Time Travel without death.

You think Naruto would take that title, as they had at least 3 separate Arcs of 20+ episodes of filler. 1 of the Arcs dedicated to filler flashbacks

And Naruto pulls the Child of Destiny/Hidden power thing as well
#18 - astriatus (10/15/2013) [-]
True, but more often than not, Naruto's filler at least serves to characterize someone. It's plot-hindering, viewer-gouging crap, but I'll watch just about anything to learn more about Shikamaru or the Hyuugas. Bleach is just blind season expansion. Still, Naruto, and especially Naruto Shippuden, are close competitors.

And the uniquely powerful protagonist is common in Japanese media in general. Anime is no exception. That doesn't make it any less unimaginative, but as long as it's well executed, it can be fun to watch. Moreover, it also makes believably human protagonists that much more entertaining, and consistent fighting scenes—those with rules which must be followed (i.e.: no exceptions for being the main character)—such as Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (and S) or Code Geass all the more impressive.

I'll give Bleach one thing, though: Ichigo is a better main than Naru Naruto's a one-trick pony with all the intrigue and levity of a butter knife; Ichigo's at least got a spiritual- and physical-world side to him. You're still comparing a slow painful death with a somewhat faster but equally painful death, but 2.5D is more entertaining than 2D.
