this and the episode about love potion (ending) really hits hard. Show can be wtf is going on entire episode but than this happens

sometimes I hate how real this show is

unity does not act like an all seeing god,
she acts like a grown up trying to keep shit together but instead of her being one person who
threw a big house party and fucked everything up she is a planet full of people, the concepts
are still the same, at the end be in one person or a billion she still explains via notes that rick
is an awful person and she has just matured and grown past him.

the idea of being reunited with a long lost love but losing them because while they have grown
up you have not is very relatable.

Just because the show moves fast, doesn't mean it shouldn't have points that make you stop. A lot of good shows will give you hints and jabs toward a theme or idea they want you to know, only to continue with the show before you can fully grasp it. It's fast, but when you get the chance at the end of the episode it can rush together in your head and make a moment of meaningful realization. Difference between a good show and a great one right there.

The alien rick killed was a test to make sure his ray worked so he could use it on himself. One could speculate that after seeing the notes Rick saw the slope that he had been going down all this time, and couldn't bear to realize that his happiness was a thin sheet of ice that was already melting. The problem being that Rick can't handle those types of situations, he barely handles much easier trauma's without copious amounts of booze. When that clashes with his Atheism he gets close to ending it but doesn't. he can't just end his life, it's literally all he has.

Rick seems to either block out or try and skate right over everything he doesn't want to handle by moving to the next project or destroying something in a rage. There was this episode, the Project Phoenix clones that he killed, the alien he brawled with in his car battery. He's a destructive force without too much of a solid hold besides his family and "projects". Unity especially was made to be an old flame that he felt comfortable and safe with, how would you feel after a break up, knowing that all this time making a change or noticing you're being too X or Y could have saved something. Coming from someone who was in a relationship for just over six years and lost it rather recently, I can sympathize with it.

Now for the clone bit, that was Morty. He seems to get more and more calloused as these things keep happening, but he takes it and finds a way to spin it into his world view. He found solace in life being without purpose and started to just enjoy the "now", talking with bird person about how Rick uses deflection, anger, and science to cover up all the pain he's caused and felt helped him realize that Rick isn't all bad.

The show isn't a pinnacle of how things should be or what you should feel, but it does present some interesting points in a very organic way.

We know Rick is sad, but our emotions aren't always something we are aware of. Rick was the one to realize this time, and how he coped was was what we saw. He was so upset that he couldn't be angry or just push past it. He tried to take a way out and once again, he tried something and failed, and couldn't finish it. That kind of pain is deep seeded. It was for us to see him seeing himself.

Also, to say that a show keeps beating you over the head with it's characters traits is trite and boring is a bit of an oddity. Do you enjoy Supernatural? Doctor Who? Anything along those lines. Characters always exhibit their biggest traits to show they are themselves, but having them see and try to change or fight against themselves is a way to show character growth.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on shows. Personally I think the "Lessons and feels" tends to lend to the comedy. A lot of times having emotional scenes in comedies serve as a focusing lens for the punchlines. Like crombopulous Michael doing actual good for the wrong reason and Morty learning that not all good deeds go unpunished. but the entire time there were laughs and fucked up moments and a 5th dimension being named fart that could shit gold.

A long time ago I had heard this factoid that shakespear plays being held had flags flown outside the theatre to denote what kind of play it was. If it was a tragedy, a black flag would denote it and it would end in a funeral. If it was a comedy, a white flag would fly and it would end in a wedding. Feelings and emotions only tend to enhance each other. Watch a comedy without a laugh track and see how funny it is as compared to a comedy that doesn't have one. Same premise for horror without music and sound. Everything serves it's purpose to get you to do a thing they want you to do. Rick and Morty throw feels in to grow characters and lead the viewer to what they want them to know or feel.


Side note: I'm unsure about the shakespear thing. it was somethign I learned most likely in highschool...yeaaaaars ago.

did you finish the shooting scene? Beth succumbs to alcoholism, and after the credits they are in a hospital trying to visit him in PT, when the doctor says "if you love him, you should leave".

That gave a short but acute linger after the big finish of killing a character that wasn't really shown in the series until then (he was apparently shown a few times in season 2, but never in the spotlight). It had a serious tone, but it was still impacting a humorous moment.

It was funny, but the scene itself was serious. See what I'm getting at here? The serious bits serve to enhance the both the show as a whole, and the comedy itself.

Rick may use his experience with Unity in another episode to do something really funny. Like collectively kick the hivemind shes seeing in all of his balls for fun, that would be great.

I agree with you that the show isn't just supposed to be a feels trip, but just having the Wa-hey wackey fun time show gets (provably) boring. The need to balance out such a brash and hard hitting show with really tempered and "thought-provoking" scenes keeps people interested and coming back. where as a "Hey we're so funny look us (IM MISTER MEESEEKS LOOKIT ME!) for 24 minutes straight becomes dull without some sort of change in the story to add depth or some sort of complexity.

Not to sound condescending, but the concept of pacing is something that is proven to work, and writers wouldn't throw something so important to story telling away because they felt they needed to be funny all the time. they would lose viewership.
