The glutes are perhaps the most important part of a balanced hip. When your glutes are strong they pull your pelvis posteriorly (backwards). If you the weak glues, you see that the hip goes forward and down, which makes a sticking gut and a donald-ducks ass. Strengthening the glutes will therefore make your torso-posture much better looking.
Because of out sitdown lifestyles, the vast majority of people and lifters have proportionally weak glutes and abs compared to their strong hip-flexors and lower back.
Look yourself in the mirror sideways, first in a relaxed position, then squese your glutes and and at the posture. which is more desireable?

Your ass isn't going to explode out of nowhere. The only way you'll have a noticeably muscular butt is if you're squatting 315+ like myself, and you don't get there by accident. Just work squats, but don't worry too much about overloading them. Get to 225 for a few reps and just maintain.
