I have an older model of bamboo Bamboo fun which has an 8.5 x 5.4 active area, which feels pretty right, and has served me well. The current closest model is the Intuos pen and touch medium.
I'm looking at upgrading right now, and am honestly trying to steer away from wacom. They make the best product, but the current intuos sizes for their price is absurd. I'm looking into getting a monoprice tablet, which can be had for $50 and alot of people actually have a better time using than wacom's. The only problem I generally see with them is that some people have problems with the drivers on windows. Apparently it is something to do with the default drivers windows installs, so you have to install the companies version before plugging it in.
I think it's worth looking into, perhaps buying and trying off of amazon so you can potentially return if something just doesn't work. But it's worth potentially saving a couple/few hundred dollars.

I tried huion and ive had to return two models because of the shit drivers and the no eraser thing. Ill look into monoprice.

You ought to be able to go in, and if not through the windows default uninstall process, uninstall it by deleting the files manually.

Yeah, normally wacom have small as shit models for that price range. You might be able to find some big tablets from monoprice for cheap but I don't really know all that much about them little alone if they're reliable or not.

alright ill check it out. I got a huion and this thing is plain awful. Its huge and cheap but for some reason it requires the pressure of a mountain to use.

Actually, looking at some Huion stuff real quick, Huion and Monoprice use the same digitizers, so they should be similar. The drivers for each are different, so that ought to affect things.

Taken from a review on Huion products. Assuming windows.
"In Windows, be sure to install the drivers before plugging the tablet in. Windows has insidious default tablet drivers it will install otherwise. They don’t work well and you’ll swear there’s something wrong with your hardware. There isn’t. Deleting your HID stack in Device Manager is the only help here and even it may not work. You may have to reinstall a fresh copy of the OS. Additionally, in Windows 7 at least, disable Tablet PC services from the services menu. Uninstall Tablet PC components. Uncheck “Support Tablet PC Features” from the tablet driver icon in the system tray. Minimally, disable Pen Flicks. All of these things impact drawing performance. I haven’t tested any of these devices on Windows 8 as yet."

If you're looking for cheap, do not buy wacom. They make a quality product, but they have a similar issue as apple with overpricing.
Monoprice is a brand I have heard only good things from. The only issue people ever really have with them is drivers on windows can be a bitch to get to work.

I recommend one of those two. You can also get them from Amazon. Some people have problems with the pens and report that buying a replacement one works better, so keep that in mind. But mac users generally hail that this brand has smoother and quicker tracking than wacom.
Interesting that you have problems with Huion. Have you made sure the drivers are working properly?
I'm actually looking at putting together a DIY cintiq Wacoms brand of tablet that has a built in screen , by buying on of those tablets and a used lcd, and a few wiring components, I should be able to do so for under $200. Far better than the cintiq pricing of 2k+

Perhaps if I could see what the tablet looked like. I'm assuming you also got a CD with the tablet software on it. Most tablets won't work (pen pressure wise) without having installed the software. As far as the raser goes again I'd need to see it.
