Probably not, I've always associated cultural marxism with multiculturalism for some reason, is that not correct?
User avatar #54903 - arisaka (01/04/2014) [-]
Far from it. Cultural Marxism as you know it is a derogatory word used to smear "progressive" policy and ideology.

ACTUAL cultural Marxism is an umbrella term to theories that evolved from Western Marxist thought by the Frankfurt School and others. Basically it expands traditional Marxist inquiry to subjects Marx himself was not aware of (due to numerous things, like society and the mode of production being transformed) of using a more modern methodology. It argues that, in our modern society, there are other forces that are central to oppression, such as culture, race, sex, etc. Essentially, the rest of the superstructure (as opposed to simply the economic base of society).

Why? A lot of this philosophy is influenced by postmodernism, which rejects metanarratives (the combination of all knowledge into one single framework). Marxism as a positivist science (which it was considered to be by a lot of people) is a metanarrative, and instead should be treated as a critique. This is exactly what the Frankfurt School did.

My question to you now is the question of the zeitgeist: do you believe that society influences culture, or does culture influence society?
User avatar #54909 - jewishcommunazi (01/04/2014) [-]
I guess I've been taught wrong. Apparently the internet isn't that reliable.

"My question to you now is the question of the zeitgeist: do you believe that society influences culture, or does culture influence society?"

That's sort of a "chicken and egg" question for me, whenever I think it's one, I start to see why it could also be the other way around.
User avatar #54935 - arisaka (01/05/2014) [-]
Which is exactly where I am at right now.

BACK TO THE PHILOSOPHIZING CHAMBER!

I'm not exactly the reading kind, that's why my opinions on these things are more my supposions on how people who identify themselves as these things behave.
User avatar #54902 - arisaka (01/04/2014) [-]
They're a product of culture, and culture itself is a product of reification.

This is what they are looking at/talking about! As well as looking at things from different perspectives (sociological, psychological, etc).
#54844 - valeriya (01/03/2014) [-]
I remember reading something by marcuse then I started to get annoyed at the revisionism, I culture is mildly important and can be engineered by the state, it's just a matter of crushing anything you disagree with, for example in Yugoslavia and the USSR Nationalism and national culture was crushed and when I say crushed I mean really crushed and replaced, what I absolutely deteste is that they put culture mass media etc, and over value it against control of the means of production and the removal of the Economic ruling class.
User avatar #54846 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
Also, fuck your revisionism. Lenin is a revisionist, Stalin is a revisionist, and the U.S.S.R was a joke.

User avatar #54848 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
Ahh, yes. The good old "I can't come up with a response, here's an interior monologue meme featuring a shitty theoretician/opportunist moron".
User avatar #54845 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
They don't. They don't over value it. They recognize that it isn't the 19th century anymore and that image/information culture is the way of life now.

Instead of creating a new positive science they offered a critique. They're not creating an ideology, they're tearing down and old one. They're using new methodology.
#54849 - valeriya (01/03/2014) [-]
The thing is, they're just stating the obvious, culture has been used to oppress and control people for ages, (See Ukraine under the Russian Empire) and communications as well (See also opposition to Alexander the 3rd who crushed the press for so much as speaking out, this also happened elsewhere in Europe) because they recognized this long before neo-marxists even damn well existed information wars and cultural wars started ages ago, they're really not actually bringing anything new the to playing field.
User avatar #54851 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
In fact, I'd say everything produced by the Frankfurt School is a thousand times more "dialectical" than all that bullshit produced by those jerkoffs in the U.S.S.R.

The only good bolshevik was Lukacs, and he was barely that. Motherfucker wrote more about epistemology than dialectics.

The fact you write a lot more passive aggressive then I remember you being and a lot more inciting as well, which is how people interpret my writing.

The fact of the matter is that in a nucleus of pretension and looking down on people, you either look down on those people or be looked down upon.

You ramble, but I don't think that's because of yr brain (possible language barrier). I try and be as volatile as possible without people here accusing me of being a "general libtard".
#54859 - valeriya (01/03/2014) [-]
Really I've never thought I ramble, I do fluff out points granted, but that's because I'm more used to analysis and writing descriptively, and the language barrier doesn't help.
User avatar #54862 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
and tbh i've been spending a lot of time doing other things (reading/writing prose, painting, music, long distance lover, school, etc). not much time here. I think I've always been passive aggressive and inciting. Too lazy to ever create an actual structured retort.
User avatar #54861 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
Formatting shall help.

Separate all ideas into paragraphs. Paragraphs shouldn't ever bee too long. Avoid runoff sentences. If you can't avoid one, break it into two paragraphs.

One topic sentence per paragraph. Each paragraph should contain its own topic sentence, body, and thesis.

Follow a line of argumentation. etc.
User avatar #54850 - arisaka (01/03/2014) [-]
The difference:

1) It was a concentrated and ACEDEMIC attack on mass media and mass culture. "Mass Society" was put under scrutiny.

2) If you think everything these people said is 100% new work or of recent development, you're silly. Adorno, like the rest of the Frankfurt School, drew inspiration from Kant. I assume you know who he is.

3) They were not so much concerned about authoritarianist media and culture, but how it existed in the "free" world.

4) There is a deep, dialectical analysis that you're trivializing as "stuff we already knew". Please. Lenin, Stalin, etc regarded Marx's work as a positivist science and NOT as a critique. Disgusting. You think THEY brought anything new? Yeah, right. Neo-Marxism (including all the wonderful work by the Situationists) produced not only a completely new framework of analysis, but probably one of the most coherent, relevant and concentrated critiques since the late Karl Marx himself.

I find it atrocious that they implemented some of the largest austerity measures in the history of their career as a party last year (despite being a more left leaning party) but then they have the nerve to propose policy that will cost a large sum of money as well.
