I also recommend having a 50% grey back layer so your sense of value isn't thrown off by that horrible white color and that you get your darkest darks down first so it gives the entire picture a consistent perspective value wise!

Typically the only thing I wind up changing is the flow of my brush which controls how much pigment comes out at once. I never change the mode of my brush because it's incompatible with my drawing style. x) Multiply tends to burn my pictures too dark and color dodge adds unsightly contrast.

This one's no big secret. I only used one layer and there were no shortcuts in the getting to of this point. x) Just sat down and photoshopped for 3 hours. Had lots of reference, lots of coffee, and the characters that I was to draw in front of me. x)
