tell you what, i can see you're not exactly a pro at this, so i'll try and give you a few pointers.

1) You're going to need a lot more than equal value items for some items. Newer items, like books, are very rare and disappear almost instantly, so if you could try and play the market for other items first, like obtaining a thumb gear or FJ coin, then you may be able to accumulate something.
2) stock up. never pass on expensive items, even if youre sure you wont obtain them. try no matter what, and you can catch other with what they want later.
3) Be confident and sure of yourself :) i found that i do much better when i believe in myself, and i bet you can too!
4) always try to be the setter of the trade. if someone sets a high price for you, try to lower it. if they dont budge, just move on to the next person. play off their desperation for the item, and you can gain what you want easy.
