Generally, you aren't prepared for the real thing, unless fighting someone is your entire purpose, which, omg, is the purpose for the competitions. A real fight is fast, hard, and both people are likely pissed off at one another and not really thinking straight, AND, the're in each other's faces.

Several martial arts are useful for fighting an opponent of larger size. Its all about leverage, and manipulation of your opponents center of gravity. Now admittedly a larger opponent is more difficult, but if you know what your doing, you can take care of them.

My old tai kwon do instructor is an 150 lb Mexican man, who easily took my father, a 300-400 lb white guy, who can bench around 500 lb's. Just saying, its not impossible.
