Service fag here (United States Coast Guard Gunners Mate First Class). How is it sad? He could be a member of the National Guard (which performs all kinds of natural disaster relief) doing a combat tour.

He could be someone who used the ROTC scholarship to pay for college and is fulfilling his service commitment.

No, its because of service men and women in the armed forces of any democratic state, that said states retain their autonomy, thus; their freedom.
