They are typically the same length, but that's not necessarily true. Some people run manic for years and then crash hard, but don't stay depressed for the same length of time. If you think you have the symptoms, then ask your doctor about it. The worst thing that you can possibly hear is "I think that you're fine" or "You may have depression, but probably not bipolar disorder".

The only symptom I was missing from a full Bi-Polar diagnosis was a Manic episode lasting a week or more.
It was 3 visits before I got a diagnosis. Going over symptoms that I've had over the years.

I have Depression with Bi-Polar symptoms which is a new classification of depression.
I also have ADD which runs in my family unfortunately.

Any good psychiatrist won't laugh at you unless you make a legitimate joke.
Typically when you're there talking to them, there isn't much to joke about.
