I've only played 2 and 3 doesn't really say anything about the previous game. Actually just from the beginning, I was confused what was going on and I think that it takes a long while after 2. The only thing mentioned was Geralt (Main character) dated Triss (girl with red hair you'll meet later.).

I did, (I've went back and played them after though) and you can. You might be a little out of the loop on some things but they're not important to the main story, just like how the people feel about things. There are also returning characters and they make references to the older games so you'd have to watch for spoilers if you plan on playing the other two.

yes is good never played the other 2 or anything but 3 was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good and you pretty much get the gist of it and the characters are all really likeable so thats nice
