Not from a religious one, but a scientific one.

The reason the me now and the me a year from now are (or feel like) the same person, is all the time in between.
#29 - apurpleliger (07/28/2014) [-]
The "new you" would have your memories, but it wouldn't be you. Once you die, you die. Maybe they can recreate your body from before you died, but that's a new person in that body. Not talking about spirit or soul or anything like that even, it's still more or less a fact that when the brain stops, consciousness ends. Newly reformed brain means new consciousness.
User avatar #49 - konradkurze (07/28/2014) [-]

Potentially, yes.
User avatar #52 - choclategum (07/28/2014) [-]
That's a little different. Their brain is still in their body and probably still active. it takes 10 seconds to 7 minutes for your brain to fully stop after death. from what I read. where as in this case their body was completely burnt to ashes. Brain included maybe. so there not much consciousness left.
User avatar #53 - konradkurze (07/28/2014) [-]
yeah but what about those people brought back after the 7 minute barrier....

like say....that dead chinese baby that woke up at her own funeral....alot longer than 7 minutes
User avatar #70 - wthree (07/28/2014) [-]
They might not be. The problem is, because consciousness (in the sense of "you") is purely subjective, it's impossible to tell. The question is really, at what point is the stream of consciousness interrupted enough for it to stop completely, before being restarted again.

The problem is though, it wouldn't be you. It would be a (relatively) exact copy of you. There would be no continuity between the two selves.
#18 - amuzen (07/27/2014) [-]
from a religious stand point maybe but as far as your memories and higher functions to determine who 'you are' it would be as much you as say the difference between the you of now and the you of a year ago.

don't get me wrong, the chances of that body actually being picked up by some super civilization possessed of the curiosity and medicial prestige needed to try and revive every unknown stray life form that they find as opposed to crashing into space debris or a sun or a planet made of pure acid or some shit like that is about as much chance as you being able to throw a bottle out to sea and have it get to who you're sending to.

User avatar #40 - thepollock (07/27/2014) [-]
not all mutant abilities are incredibly strong. Remember in X-Men 3? when there was that fat guy, and all he could do was become skinny? and then that tattooed chick said there was only one level 3 mutant here? That is their strength level unlike Anime, for humans/mutants their strength level is pretty much determined already.

Also they're supposed to be mutations, mutations are to help animals survive, so it's unlike that a mutant in the x-men universe would ever develop a totally useless power simply because it's totally useless.
#37 - anonymous (07/27/2014) [-]
Mutations do not automatically help things survive. Albinism is a mutation, and it most certainly doesn't help almost any species survive. In fact, humans have to take proactive steps to make sure that albino animals aren't killed almost immediately.
User avatar #21 - sciencexplain (07/27/2014) [-]
A brilliant open mind is the only thing they need to unlock their powers, and that is why Xavier is there. I love the way you think.

Because then they wouldn't be xmen mutants who's limits based on just how far they're willing to go with it, if they were just physically incapable of going further with them they wouldn't fit with the rest of the x men universe.
I'm not being like a rule nazi or something I'm just speculating that it's kind of cool that as it stands they all fit rather nicely in the x-men universe and leaves lots of room for character development later on down the road.
