W-WHAT ISN'T A FEDORA?!

I'm afraid of hats now
User avatar #19 - alfrebecht (03/13/2014) [-]
Brimmed felt hats is the only definition I know of for a fedora, traditionally they have that familiar tilt as well.

We're probably most familiar with black or brown fedoras like Indiana Jones classically wore.

That said, don't fear, <most> suit hats are not fedoras, and obviously things like ballcaps, etc. aren't as well.

Honestly, I'm not a haberdasher, the extent of my knowledge is felt, brimmed hat.

It's possible that recent events have also drawn all the old users into a more constant participation, which makes a difference.

This joke is so old though, I'm still laughing.

I actually have found no scientific studies that say eating less and exercising more leads to long-term weight loss. Common sense as it is, and as much as it has been studied, no studies have found it to be true

B) The Hobbit was written before the Lord of the Rings. He made that after the publisher requested a sequel. He did however make some changes to the Hobbit to fit with the Lord of the Rings. I don't know what those changes where, or how much they involved the ring.
User avatar #45 - ihatem (03/03/2014) [-]
1.) That's a given, I know that, I didn't mean he was 111 in the Hobbit, I mean it mostly just slowed aging in the Hobbit, not as corrupting as the Lord of the Rings, the Ring's behavior totally changes because it wasn't thought of that way yet
2.) I hope you're not saying The Hobbit was written before the Lord of the Rings
3.) Like I said in the first, it wasn't as well explained in the Hobbit or developed, it did desire to return to it's master through some corrupting means though

2.) *I hope you're not saying The Hobbit was written after LotR
User avatar #48 - alfrebecht (03/03/2014) [-]
It actually was, while The Hobbit was published at a much earlier date than LotR, The Lord of the Rings was conceived of and put to paper well before The Hobbit found a publisher. I suppose it would be more accurate for me to say LotR was written before The Hobbit was published.
Tolkien had already worked out the arc for the ring well before then, and considering the attention to detail in his world-making, it would be odd to believe that he would allow such important details escape his notice. Consider all the details about the necromancer in the Hobbit which only make sense in context of LotR and Simarillion.

To understand how Tolkien's method of writing worked, you have to understand it wasn't piecemeal, his whole writing career was centered around a massive epic we sadly never got to see in one volume, which would have contained all of the events of the world that LotR exists within. When he wrote it wasn't moment by moment, but more similar to a large web where every piece was connected as it was created.
