N. Korean citizen (12/16/2011) [-] no, Oedipus didn't run away from home, his father abandoned him at birth because he was told by an oracle that his son(Oedipus) would kill him. His name comes from his real father staking his foot to the ground with a spear of some sort (hence the name Oedipus). The neighboring city people found him and raised them w/o telling him he was adopted. He went to see an oracle to see his future and was told that he would kill his own father. Fearing this, he ran away from his adopted city, and to his fathers kingdom. On his way he passes by his real father and pushes him off a cliff because he was being stubborn and wouldn't let him pass. Later he gets to the city and seeing that the king is gone, takes over and marries his real mother. They have kids. Later he finds out that the oracle was right, and he did kill his father, and his mother realized before Oedipus so she killed herself. Oedipus realizing this too late blinds himself as punishment for his doings. And Hamlet was based on a story of a prince named Amleth. The story was pretty much the same but everybody didn't die and Amleth became king. Didn't stop Shakespeare jigging it up. I'm just saying it probably isn't trying to be 100% accurate. | ||
