It's used all throughout the Americas, including the US. But regardless, Spain's Spanish isn't really relevant for making an informed judgment on the Spanish language. There are more Spanish speakers in the US alone than there are Spanish citizens. New World dialects are what's more important when it comes to the Spanish language. If anything, Spain's Spanish is what not to use. It's almost like using Middle English in the US. People will know what you mean, but they'll probably think you're a huge tool for talking like that.

TLDR: Most Spanish speakers aren't Spanish. And for the most part, they use the word papa.
