Well at least the questions they ask are philosophical questions who's answer is generally pretty obvious. Paying money to them will always get you the demon (at least in my experience). Same thing with giving items.

Granted I've only played two (not Persona) Shin Megami Tensei games, Nocturne and Devil Summoner.

In the most recent one, SMT 4, they'll often take items, money, and even your health, and instead of joining just run off with it, with some stupid excuse like "you're too nice" or "I can't join somebody who gives stuff away so easily". Or sometimes they'll just say bye and leave. On the other hand, give them nothing and they just get angry. Even trying to moderate doesn't seem to work for me 9/10.

I heard somewhere that for SMT 4 they've randomized negotiations, so you can't even find a reliable pattern. I've seen the same monsters react to the same answers differently, and it overall is just very irritating. It's not even trial and error, it's a dice roll in disguise.

To be honest, curtains being blue is a pretty shitty analogy for sadness not disagreeing with what you're saying, it's well thought out and makes a point
It could be argued that curtains being blue contributes to a greater scene, which might spell out one's mood. Setting is a very good mood setter for a book.

If the visual of the room really mattered, then he would not only include the color of the curtains but more detail to create the image, as either some sort of plot device or detail to describe the room more vividly, in which case it would be just one part of a whole.

I agree, and typically when introducing a new enviroment the author typically does describe a few items (depending on the author and the importance of the area of course). Something I've always had trouble with is after saying the curtians are blue and that means the character is sad or whatever what about after that? from there on out the curtains (unless otherwise noted) can be assumed to have remained blue, would that mean they would remain perpetually sad?
