The males don't actually exist until mating season tho, they are only produced so that they can fly out and mate with new queens and then die.


There's a lot of interesting stuff about ant reproduction. For example, the ant queen only mates once in her life, then stores the sperm in a special organ in her abdomen, to be used to fertilize her eggs throughout her life.

An ant queen controls what her offspring will grow into. She does this by varying the gestation time of each of her eggs; the longer they remain inside her body, the smaller the resultant ant will become. Therefore soldier ant eggs are laid quickly, while worker ant eggs take more time to pass out of the queens reproductive tract.

Also, the queen doesn't actually need to use the sperm cells in her body for every single egg. Only her female offspring need a sperm cell, if an egg is laid with no sperm cell ever contacting it it will grow into a male ant. Therefore, male ants are actually male clones of the queen.

During mating season, the queen ant fertilizes a batch of eggs and lays them immediately; these will grow into new 'virgin' queen ants, which have wings. The queen also lays a batch of eggs more slowly without fertilizing them; these grow into her male 'clones', which also have wings. After the new queens and the male drones fully mature, the worker ants of the colony prepare a chamber near the surface which can be quickly opened and closed, allowing all the new queens and drones to escape as quickly as possible while keeping the colony safe.

Once out, the queens and drones fly util they find mates from other colonies, which also produce new queens and drones at around the same time. The males mate with the females and deposit sperm in the females' pouch, then they fly off and die. The queens wander until they find a suitable spot to start a new colony, then dig a very small shallow hole to lay eggs in and shed their wings. Until the first round of workers reach maturity the queen does all the foraging for food and tending to the young, then as time goes by she moves permanently underground as her workers continue to forage and dig and her soldiers protect the colony from threats.


And so on turns the great freaky circle of life in on our horrifying planet.

Lizards are another example. The male mates with the female and fertilizes her eggs. Seems normal, right?

Wrong.

Lizards don't have X or Y sex chromosomes, they have W and Z. Why? Because otherwise, we'd be forced to call the egg laying lizard the male and the sperm depositing lizard the female. That's right, in lizards, the sex chromosomes carry the opposite traits as we would expect.

Female lizards are WZ, analogous to XY.

Male lizards are WW, analogous to XX.

That's why if a female lizard washed up on a deserted island alone, she can produce her own set of male offspring, mate with them, and lay eggs of both sexes, thus starting an entirely new population of lizards on said island. They'd be bottlenecked genetically, but since lizards have such a fast reproductive cycle, they would quickly rebuild genetic diversity.

Think of it like this.

WAAAAYY back in the day, before any of the types of animals and such that live today existed, long before land animals or complex fishes, way back in the cambrian explosion, there was virtually no difference between males and females. All organisms were probably hermaphrodites, sharing identical features. Eventually, to better optimize for specific roles and gain an advantage, male and female organisms started to show more and more sexual dimorphism. The sex cells, which used to be identical, were also effected. In our case, the female cells became eggs, while the male cells became sperm. In the lizard ancestors case, the opposite happened.

That means that the Lusty Argonian Maid is actually a dude (genetically, from our perspective).
