I should buy the product of a company I don't like just so I can try it out, even though I have already given it a shot through other people. Brilliant logic there.

Sorry. You do have to buy this bag of shit and smear it all over your face to know it. It's like meeting a crusty whore on the street vs actually paying for her. In one, you're just acquainted, but in the other, she's taking your money in exchange for mediocre service. It's OK though. I don't hold it against you, but you just can't say you truly know what Shit™ is all about.

Wow. Man you're very opinionated in something you don't have much experience in.
Calling it shit without buying the product yourself.

Alright i'll try to think from your point of view. I've seen a microsoft surface, i've seen people use it. I haven't bought one though, but i make the fair assumption i don't want one. Maybe i'll like it, but i generally think it's a very very expensive tablet, at over a grand for very limited features.

The bottom line is i don't want a surface.
You could have just told me you didn't want a mac. But i had to get a novel from you because of your discontent with apple.

I'm just not as partial, i don't think i can be because i entertain many things, and give them a fair chance.

>don't have much experience in
I've told you multiple times that I've used Apple products. They fail to impress, meaning that I have no reason to buy one for myself. And hey, newsflash, the Surface is pretty shit too. Again, my "hate" isn't limited only to crApple.

I'll give things their fair chance, but I'm not going to make excuses for lackluster products. That's all. Hell, I'll talk shit about my preferred products all day long because I'd like for them to be better. Settling for shit is never a good thing.

As for the "novel," I've already told you that it was mainly because it was late at night and it felt good to rant. That doesn't mean I don't stand by my points though.

Bruh. Listen. You don't have much experience in macs because you just tried it not owned it.
Someone who shoots someone else's gun at the range, or drives someone else's car, doesn't have as much experience as the person that owns that brand. Since they live with it daily.

I could climb in a buddies challenger and say wow this corners like a truck, but the guy that owns it knows how to make the best of it and fully appreciates that make and model. Experience does not come from just trying something.
#13 - OtisMcWonderful (01/09/2016) [-]
Oh, you're totally right! Why even bother with display models? Just buy your PC blindly! Why even bother with test drives? Just buy a car blindly! Why even bother with trying anything? JUST BUY BUY BUY!!! If you love it, then you'll have to justify it to everyone else! If not, you can just say you gave it its fair chance! Wow! How did I not realize this before?!

See, the thing is, I don't hate Macs. It's an inanimate object. Whatever. My problem is with the sack of shit company that sells them as premium products when they're mediocre in reality. My other problem, though to a far lower degree, is with people that lap it up because muh brand recognition and status symbols.

How about you tell me what Mac is about? You've stated that plenty of times without elaborating on what exactly that's supposed to mean. Is it about having the Apple tramp stamp on your laptop lid or on the back of your phone? Is it about overpaying for weaker hardware just to browse Facebook? You tell me. You're the one sucking Apple's dick. Tell me why it's so good.

Hardware.
I'm in the military, i like that it's cold, aluminum, tougher than plastic.
I like the mac air's small mobile weight and long battery life of 12 hours, with about 1.5 hours to full charge. 30 days of standby time, i just close the lid and later resume where i was. Sometimes i even charge the thing. If it dies it saves the session so i plug it in and my session is back with no lost work. Its got a backlit keyboard despite the lower half being half an inch tall. The trackpad is better than any trackpad i've ever used. If i don't have a mouse with me i don't care. It's fast and responsive pinch zoom/scroll/gestures have virtually no noticeable delay and i can almost match a mouse's speed when doing certain specific tasks. It feels like i could throw it in a bag without stressing, and i have been for 3 years.

Software
The trackpad and OS are interconnected. Playing video means i can pinch scroll frame by frame to find a particular frame to screencap, or swipe it to scrub frames quickly. Speaking of screencap, both screenshot and video are included in OSX. Complete with mapped hotkey i can screenshot and drag a specific area and it saves to desktop automatically, or a hotkey to capture all desktop and save to desktop. In windows i have to PrtScr and open paint then paste, then save and name it. I can also losslessly record video of my screen with quicktime only on mac, on windows you must pay for screen recording software of any good quality, (usually how it goes, mac already does it, while windows you have to buy it). The operating system is as fast as windows. Sometimes faster because programs install by dragging and dropping the icon into the applications folder. If i want to uninstall, it's a drag into the trash bin. Most programs are drag and drop quick install. All windows programs are installed through longer wizards. I can install and uninstall 3 programs in the time of installing and uninstalling one windows program. iMovie is as good as sony vegas, garageband is cool, i just looked over a friend's shoulder, i personally don't have any experience in it. No viruses. Wirelessly and automatically syncs music from itunes to my iphone. As long as i maintain one music folder, my phone reflects that.

GRAPHIC EQUALIZATION AND GLOBAL EQU.
Windows tries its hardest to make sure i never get the chance to globally equalize my sound, meaning i adjust the bands so my bass kicks and the highs don't make my ears bleed. Expensive headphones, speakers of mine, and even my earbuds benefit from graphic equalization. My realtek drivers don't let me, windows software has nothing on it. And there is only ONE program i can use to equalize, Equalizer APO with peace gui.
it looks like ass but it works 99% of the time.

Mac tries as hard as it can to make sure you get good sound. It offers on apple's site a graphic equalizer of its own creation that looks great and works amazing called AU Lab. And if you don't want that one, there are dozens of others to choose from. Its why DJ's choose mac. Apple understands and helps. Windows lets you do it yourself, sometimes for a fee.

I could go on but i just remembered i'm talking to a stranger on the internet that doesn't give a shit about me or what i have to say. I'm severely reducing the effort i spend on you from now on.

Nice. This is way better than the "you just don't know" bullshit you were spouting earlier. Thank you for finally giving real reasons. Seriously.

Hardware
The aluminum is a double edged sword. Sure, it looks nice and all, but like I said, a dent or bend is permanent. Scratches are also more visible on aluminum as opposed to plastic. The weight and battery life can be had in other products, so that's nothing too amazing. I'm the same with the trackpad on my Chromebook. I actually prefer to use the trackpad on it versus carrying a mouse. My other laptop isn't so great with that, but it is comparable to others from its time. I feel like mine could also easily handle being thrown into a bag without worry. The Toshiba has had abuse for years, though the Chromebook is still fairly new.

Software
Frame by frame scrolling is supported by any player worth using. Nothing amazing. The clipping tool has been part of Windows since Vista, and setting up a hotkey for whatever screenshot/window grab tool you prefer for Linux is trivial. I'll give you the screen recording thing, though I don't really think it's very important at all. Also, free programs like OBS do it just fine anyway. There are a fair amount of tools that are available as standalone exes, eliminating the need to install. Just drop it where you need it and run. Installers are simply a relic of the past for compatibility reasons. Windows, if you didn't know, is very popular for enterprise use, so it needs to maintain that share of the market by supporting their older programs. iTunes will automatically and wirelessly sync to iDevices on Windows. It's done that for years.

>no viruses assuming you mean malware in general, as most people do
That's a lie and you know it. I guess boonana, flashback, hackback, lamadai, cointhief, appetite, and many others mean absolutely nothing to you. There's also the fact that OSX doesn't hold a large enough market share to really make them worth it to begin with. You're better off targeting Windows if you want to really spread.

GRAPHIC EQUALIZATION AND GLOBAL EQU
I don't know what's up with yours, but I'm able to equalize audio system-wide with my default Realtek drivers if I so choose. However, I choose not to play audio from shit sources instead of polishing bad audio with an equalizer.

Again, this is so much better. Try to start with something like this next time instead of just telling people they need to buy a product they have no interest in. I understand that it's a bit much, so a tl;dr version of something like this would be great.

I can't agree with some things about
Software
Frame by frame scrolling is supported by any player worth using. Nothing amazing.
-Except you do it with the trackpad using gestures, pinching, two finger scrolling.
I can find a single frame i want in a video 10 times faster than windows with mouse. As well as it feels very fast and natural. You'll have to trust my review of its performance.

The clipping tool has been part of Windows since Vista,
-Exept on mac you press the key, click and drag, and its saved to the desktop with a name. Do it on windows and you find the snipping tool, click new snip, click and drag, save the image, specify the directory, name it, and then it's finally done. its slower.

I'll give you the screen recording thing, though I don't really think it's very important at all. Also, free programs like OBS do it just fine anyway.
-i can't get OBS to record my windows screen without chopping off the side, i've been through forums and fixes and gave up after an hour. The right side gets loped off.

There are a fair amount of tools that are available as standalone exes, eliminating the need to install. Just drop it where you need it and run. Installers are simply a relic of the past for compatibility reasons. There are players that also support that on Windows and Linux. BakaMPlayer has mouse gestures, which gives it trackpad gestures by default, for example. I do prefer a keyboard for this kind of thing. I'm much faster with it.

The snipping tool isn't perfect, but it's still decent. Freeform selection is neat. I do prefer to just alt+prtscn when I need a specific window captured though. I've noticed that a lot of people don't know that, so maybe you learned something here too. No more cropping to the window you want.

I haven't had that issue with OBS myself. It works as it should once you figure it out.

Standalone programs are usually relegated to small tools like GPU-Z, Speccy, etc. So it isn't extremely common. A lot of pirated games also work the same way though. Just extract it and play. And yeah, iTunes on Windows is pretty decent. It's what I've used for years, though I guess that's mostly just due to habit since it's been so long. I wouldn't have any issues switching, but I haven't had a reason to switch yet.

I've never had to wipe any PC for getting too slow. The best example of this would be my old XP PC I got back in middle school. It ran just fine for nearly 10 years on the same Windows install, and it still runs fine today with an Ubuntu install.

And two things:
1) I don't need to buy a Mac to try it out. I've used them plenty of times before. Again, the OS is totally fine. The hardware itself is just not up to my standards.
2) I don't need to try their products to know that I don't like them as a company. Apple isn't the only one I treat like this. I also avoid buying Intel and Nvidia when possible, for example.

The OS is fine, but it isn't worth paying the Apple tax. A hackintosh is a much more viable option if someone only wants the OS. No one thinks the products are inherently bad. It's just that they're far over-priced for what you actually get.

I love having tools in my toolbelt. Two Windows desktops, Linux desktop, two Linux laptops one of them being my de-ChromeOS'd Chromebook , Linux RasPi2, etc. There is nothing that OSX could offer me that I couldn't do even if I only ran Windows.

I will say I went a bit overboard on the previous comment, but it was 3am and it felt good to rant about something before going to bed.

If you can spare the cash i say go for it.
Mid 2013 macbook air is 900 bucks today when i got it for 1000 back in 2013.
Never had to wipe it. Hasn't crapped out, slowed down.
I can't say the same for my windows machines.
My lenovo i bought for 1000 in 2014, sold in 2015 for 650 after needing to be wiped twice and slowed down a little.

They're light, cold, fast, optimized, hardy, long lasting, well built, factory loaded machines. Just not cheap, (and you'll finally understand why if you get one)
I could work for best buy and sell windows and macs, in fact i would love to.

Windows, if you didn't know, is very popular for enterprise use, so it needs to maintain that share of the market by supporting their older programs. iTunes will automatically and wirelessly sync to iDevices on Windows. It's done that for years.
-I learned a thing

#20 - OtisMcWonderful (01/10/2016) [-]

And I bet it's no faster at opening programs than my $200 Chromebook that has somewhat equivalent battery life.

Sure, there's more than power to consider, but when you're paying that much for PC hardware, power is expected. I'm not even talking about games. There's more uses for "horsepower" in a PC than games. No one wants what is essentially a tablet in an aluminum shell that throttles itself doing basic tasks. Oh, and one port. One. Single. USB port. Garbage. Want more? Buy an Apple® Certified™ USB C hub for $50+ depending how much purpose you want from your device. Nevermind that they're standard on every other laptop out there and that it looks like a tumor sticking out of your Facebook machine. So back to that aluminum. Durable, right? Hell no. When it gets dented or bent, you're pretty much stuck with that. Sure, you could bend it back, but it'll never go back to that perfect slab of unibody precision you paid oh so dearly for. You know what happens to plastic? It pops back into place. It deals with shock much better. As for optimization, that's a load of shit too. El Capitan added essentially no performance improvements for older Macs. There were plenty of users complaining of Yosemite hobbling their PCs that ran just fine on Mavericks. This is just like newer versions of iOS crippling older iPhones. And I know what you'll say, "Just don't update then." Why are those updates allowed on the older hardware then? It's one simple reason. Planned obsolescence. They cripple performance by simply not optimizing newer software for older hardware so that people will buy the new hardware.

I'm not really saying I endorse all the Apple hate or think that it's necessary or that Apple is the only one guilty of bullshit like this, but you know damn well that people have legitimate reasons for not liking their products, their services, their ethics as a company, or any combination of those.

Personally, I'd have preferred if Microsoft hadn't bailed Apple out all those years ago and just let them crash and burn, if only to prevent Apple from pulling its EA-like stunts like buying up smaller tech companies and claiming that Apple "innovated" everything that company had previously created. Though I do realize that another company would likely fill the hole, making Apple's death ultimately unnecessary.

tl;dr
Games aren't the only thing that need power out of a PC. Tablet in a laptop shell. Facebook machine. General butthurt.

A chromebook is a highly viable option for non gaming. Because practically, a computer is non-gaming or gaming. Sometimes video renderers get gaming computers.
I would add that i do have 2 USB ports on my mid 2013 mac air, and have never any more because the trackpad is great.
What people don't mention is the OS. Its pretty good.

But you, like many others, just "bet" on it being worse without actually trying it.
I took the leap and tried it, and i love it. I love having tools on my toolbelt. win Tower, win laptop, mac.
User avatar
#5 - OtisMcWonderful (01/09/2016) [-]

Windows, if you didn't know, is very popular for enterprise use, so it needs to maintain that share of the market by supporting their older programs. iTunes will automatically and wirelessly sync to iDevices on Windows. It's done that for years.
-I learned a thing

But don't stand here and tell me all about how you know what mac is about and how its shit when you haven't even owned one.

A normal, sane person would say, " I don't like macs, i don't plan on getting one"
But you, you have to do all this shit.
