I don't drink, I don't smoke. But if someone told me that they need some drug to cope with their current life situation, I'd prefer for them to smoke weed rather than drinking alcohol. I can't speak for others, but I think most people would agree. Drinking alcohol to deal with a problem is a very very bad thing to do, and I think most people are completely aware of that.

But I'm dependent on caffeine. Without caffeine I'd probably be unable to function as an adult.

Addiction isn't just for kids, and it's generally not a kid issue.

I think when people say that they smoke weed or drink alcohol to get over life's problems, then they usually mean something a little bit more fundamental than "Oh, I'm sleepy." The harder the drug, the bigger the problem. Caffeine used in moderation does not have severe side effects and withdrawal symptoms (if any) are mild and over after a couple of days. Adjust your sleep pattern - problem solved. Someone who smokes weed to deal with life probably has a slightly more severe problem than that.

Also, your comparison doesn't quite match. In your case, the drug you are taking solves your problem. You drink coffee, you are not sleepy anymore. A teenager with bad grades who smokes weed to forget about them for a couple of hours will still have bad grades after getting high. And getting high every day will probably not add a lot of time for studying to that person's life.

Yes, everyone is addicted to something in some way. But starting to use drugs to solve fundamental life problems that might even get worse when you use drugs is the beginning of a downward spiral.

If you get addicted to caffeine you need it to reach about the same level as a regular persons energy... which is why you do not get addicted to it, you consume it a maximum of 1-3 times a week but only when you feel like you really need it to perform in your work for example. That's how I've been rolling and I'm just fine.

Simply put if you do it this way you get the benefits of caffeine instead of using it to stay average.

Yeah pot's a teenage problem but in the adult world, most people are addicted to SOME sort of substance or poor habit to deal with their problems. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, actual drugs, massive amounts of time spent online/watching TV/playing video games, poor eating... none of these things help the problem most of the time. They're just a stall, and it is truly an adult way to handle it.

Kid's just doing what they see everyone else doing. It's shitty, and she's definitely got to find some better and more productive coping mechanism, but can you really attack her for it?

if you feel like you might be taking too much of those try lowering your dosage each week till you think you might be comfortable. Helped me with my pain meds.

I'm not taking enough I never have the money to afford them. I miss out on a lot of sleep.

Dealt with border collies for years. Loyal as hell, good mix of speed, endurance, and are incredibly smart. But holy shit they can be aggressive if you don't keep them in line. Just about fearless too. Take on a bear or moose (and usually loose in the latter case) with zero fucks given.
