|#251 - Why did we ever stop giving full suits of armor to our soldiers! [+] (21 new replies)||08/04/2014 on Military Equipment...||+3|

bullets can't chop limbs off and holes in your arms and legs generally aren't lethal, so they just wear plate carriers on their chest and a helmet.

We do give them full suits of armor. They just don't look like your fantasy knights you fucking nerd.

Musket shots could go through plate armor like butter, and considering how the majority of warfare was starting to be performed by sea at that period, not only would someone wearing full plate be turned to swiss cheese rather easily, but they would be at higher risk of drowning. After guns became so popular, people started prioritizing mobility and utility over basic defense and that trend has been followed until recently, where soldiers are issued body armor in the form of ceramic plates interlocked under Kevlar. Odds are, until a material is discovered thats so strong it can deflect AP rounds for more than a handful of times and so light the wearer wouldn't be near death from jogging in it for a mile, we're going to continue the trend for quite a while. That picture kinda reminds me of the Caldari from EvE/DUST

That is not entireley true. First: a full plate armor is by far not as immobile as you imply. In fact in full plate armor you can jump on a horse, make pus ups or even salti. Second: although early firearms ae a little bit better in penetrating armor due their high velocity but only on short distances. At high distances (50m+) an armor, even amedieval one can stop a late musket bullet very easily. Full plate armor is in fact a more renaissance thing (1500 tto 1700), that means it had to face muskets and arquebuses all the time. if it wouldnt be effective, how does it come that they were so long in use?

I may have over-exaggerated my wording a bit but the context is still there.
I know that, by the introduction of white steel, full plate was light enough that knights in full gear would do backflips and athletics just for shits and giggles. Problem is plate armor would constrict the user's field of view, protect against only a handful of shots during a period where entire volleys would be shot at a time the space for what can be used for utility is instead reserved for plates, and soldiers are wearing 30+ pounds of non-buoyant equipment during a time where naval warfare was already established and popularized. When it comes to ranged combat, full plate was never the best choice of attire when you want increased mobility and utility, hence why archers would primarily wear cloth, leather, and some chain, while carrying an ample amount of pouches and shit. Essentially, the rifleman is just the evolution of the archer. The ranged class became so popular, and in turn effective, that knights and melee-oriented war-fighters were just left behind in the dust. I love guns just as much as the next 'Mericunt, but I can't help but attribute it to the death of chivalry and hence the concept of true valor on the battlefield. Plus armor sets were pieces of fucking art, wearable architecture. Makes my dick wet.

Ah, the Boom-Shroom. Armored like a motherfucker. I will admit, Amarr, with all that gold and shit, swag around like total pimps. Gallente, nigga, their aesthetics are the bomb, plus they are generally specialized, which is my main preferred style, as opposed to the other races' radical fixations on either armor, shield, or logistics.

I call it Goldmember.
No, I mean, what corp/alliance are you in?
I fly with Shadow Cartel.
I run a minnie char as my main, but I get to fly almost every subcap equally well, so I've risen above the black swamp of space racism.
Still, triple-rep Myrmidons and nano Ishtars are fucking cool.
Also, the Kronos might be the best gatecamp-busting ship ever, and I use the Moros on a daily basis.

Ah, im in a small corp, Horizons' Edge (no relation to Horizon's Edge.) Mostly Dust bunnies, myself included. Only bit of EvE Im experienced in is that free one-week trial.
10/10, would no-life the fuck out of it if I wasn't so cheap.
But checking out the wiki, I've seen that CCP has some rather big plans for Dust. The ability to invade Warbarges should be coming soon, plus PVE. What I'm really stoked for is the mechas and hoverbikes along with the Planetside 2-tier map sizing.

One thing I'd really look forward to is, say, giving clones and capsuleers the ability to walk around and mingle while in stations. Its the small details that get me, so something like this to further emphasize the game's inter-connection would make me a happy sailor. Or, if you want something that affects gameplay, letting Dusties take contracts to capture or assassinate bounties in stations, as someone who's docked is pretty much immune from other Evies.

Oh yeah, that would absolutely awesome, I wish we had that.
CCP tried to do that, back in 2011, with Incarna, but it didn't work out their way.
They'll still do it, sooner or later, especially now that there are all these space MMOs coming out.
EVE is one of the best games out there, from the detail point of view.
I've been playing it since 2012, and I'm still amazed by all the minuscule features and lore pieces in it. It really is an explorer's game.
Well, gotta go to bed now.
I'll add you in my friendlist, PM me if you ever decide to give EVE another try.
I don't usually play during summer, but autumn and winter are hunting season, and I'll happily throw you an extended buddy invite.
