At the very least it's a gesture. Bearing arms in itself is an act of defiance, the very thing that founded the U.S. in the first place. Of course some people should be free to be complacent if they choose, but why should that mean that everyone has to be?

It is a thing of Complacency along with a feeling of self righteousness. Those people who don't want others to own guns have multiple bodyguards who possess guns. They are just too stupid to understand it.

Stricter regulations and control affects the supply. Criminals get their guns illegally, from people that have aquired them legally. Reduce the number of random houses with easily-picked guns and increase the punishment for being caught with an unregistered firearm and you start having a tangible impact. (copied from anon below)

Why should someone who isn't harming anyone be punished for what someone else *might* do? And even if that were the case, that does nothing to stem the supply of guns coming in illegally from Mexico, who in turn gets them smuggled in from places like Russia or China. Really, you're just disarming the people who don't need to be disarmed for the sake of inconveniencing a few people who, if sufficiently determined, will deal with being inconvenienced.

There are instances where gun control has worked, and places where it hasn't. You can't just outright say it makes society safer, because there are just as many (if not more) examples disproving this as there are proving it. It's worked in many places in Europe (arguably), but it's failed in places like Mexico and many Liberal cities in the U.S. with strict gun control laws and murder rates that rival 3rd world warzones. Looking at the U.S.'s history with gun control, their distribution of wealth and education... I'd say they're more likely to go the route of Mexico than they are the route of modern Germany (I specify because gun control didn't make the Jews any safer back in WWII).
