if the level of the enemy is more than 3 times their combined levels, he's gonna push their shit in

It's in Numenera, so character level and NPC level are kind've different. I don't feel badly sending them up against it because the Intrusion system lets me put an end to it before everyone dies horribly (if they don't spot the exit, I can make one of them fall into it and hopefully the other can figure out what to do), but maybe they'll be able to take it. I ran a not so serious session before where one of my PCs found a one-time-use weapon that could chunk it for half its health.

the opposing army are all dragonborn , a race which in my world has lived on another island (continent) after being banished from ours. Long story short , no possible relations with the opposing army.

It's not that I can't think of a reason to make my character stay and I'll resort to it if I have to in the end, it just portrays my character in a way that isn't exacly true.
Basicly I'll have him stay because of the possibility of being renown by the city and the possible rewards that he might receive if this happens.
Kinda sounds like a greedy and shitty reason to stay when you believe the odds for you to die are abnormally high..
Furthermore the fight will be in a city without walls. Based on all the books I have read (fantasy ones) street fights are literally the worst thing a soldier can get and this is exacly that.

I just pitched that as an idea, to get the little hamster wheel spinning in your head. I'm sure you can work out something satisfying in the end, but talk it out with your DM.
