Because it is a fundamental right of every United States citizen to own a gun. Why you care if the American people wish to arm themselves against the government, when it has no effect on you, i cannot say.

It is to protect us against the government. Governments are corrupt, cruel, murderous organizations when they want too. A armed populace is the best deterrent against any large scale horrendous acts a government might commit.

What I don't understand, is why so many Europeans (I'm assuming you are a European, if not, I apologize) trust their governments so much. When just in the past Century, the governments of your lands have cause 2 world wars, genocides, crimes against humanity, a military occupation of countless countries from foreign lands (Nazi control of Europe, then the Soviet Union control of Eastern Europe). I'm sure an armed populace could have deterred many of those events. Sure, nothing recent like that has happened, but it easily can again.
