Which book series did it rip off? I'd like to read them.

It's horrible to admit, I consider Twilight a Guilty Pleasure of mine and would like to replace it with better books.

Try "Night World" by J.L. Smith, they're awesome and Twilight copies a lot of the elements/terms directly... ^^
Besides that, Amber Kizer has an amazing series about half-angel half-human creatures called the "Meridian" series.
If you haven't checked them out, the "Soul Screamers" series by Rachel Vincent is also great - banshees, soul reapers, nightmares... it has a lot going for it.
To go into my childhood, there's a trilogy of books that're simple and easy reads for a few good evenings' worth of time spent - "The Frog Princess" and its two sequels, written by E.D. Baker.
A single read, more horror than anything, is "Spirit" by J.P. Hightman, and it really gets your mind thinking. I love it.
Finally, I feel like it's overrated and mainstream, but the "House of Night" by P.C. Cast/Kristen Cast is also pretty damn amazing.

Yeah it's by the same director, Makoto Shinkai.

I could kind of tell because of the amazing illustrations of the outdoor elements... I wouldn't be surprised to see real humans walking through those scenes.
