Has the matchmaking improved? I havent played since beta, and back then it seemed like there weren't any low tier tanks. I was in my shitty little tier 2 stug against 1944 model T34's and crap
User avatar #70 - trostell (12/02/2014) [-]
The matchmaking is mostly by tier, though sometimes it gets horribly fucked up because it decides to go by battle rating. Also, you're in a StuG III with a long 75 and can't pen anything? What are you using, HE? I swear if you're doing some dumb shit like trying to snipe at range with APCR, I will personally crush you under my captured Sherman.
User avatar #200 - valyn (12/02/2014) [-]
no, i usually try to outflank and ambush at close range with APCR. Usually try to engage around 300 meters
User avatar #220 - trostell (12/03/2014) [-]
APCR is shit for killing tanks, only keep it for heavily armored targets. Use APHE, HEAT, or just standard AP if you have to, you'll do a helluva lot more damage to crew and modules, APCR does piss-poor damage beyond the armor.
User avatar #222 - valyn (12/03/2014) [-]
Huh. I kept thinking "more penetration = more killy", but its better to sacrifice a little pen. to have something that tears shit up on the inside of the armor better?
User avatar #225 - trostell (12/03/2014) [-]
Yep. One of the reason low-tier russian tanks are so deadly is their access to APHEBC, Armor Piercing, High Explosive, Ballistic Capped, which is one of the most deadly ammo-types in the game, especially against moderately armored targets like the StuG III. There's two ways to kill a tank in War Thunder. Either you set off the ammunition, either by direct hit or through fires, or you kill the entire crew. If you're a tank-sniper and can consistently hit ammunition racks, go for whatever ammo type has the best pen at your preferred range. However, if you're Joe Average and those valuable bomb-racks elude you sometimes, better to go with something more likely to screw up the tank and/or crew. You don't have to kill them all at once, if you knock out each member of the crew with a different shot, it will still take out the tank. That's a reason why the SU-122 is so effective at its tier, because the HE it uses doesn't pen anything beyond reserves and certain notoriously unarmored tank destroyers and SPAA, but there's a physics-effect referred to as spalling that splinters the inside of the tank and sends the shrapnel bouncing around like a giant shotgun blast. The bigger the impact, the greater the spalling.
User avatar #228 - valyn (12/03/2014) [-]
Nice. And yeah, I knew about the ammo housings... mostly cause i ragequit playing the Panzer 4 cause its giant external ammo cupola says "aim here, even a .22 is a one shot kill"
User avatar #229 - trostell (12/03/2014) [-]
Yeah, that's the problem with the overly realistic War Thunder tanks. It's great when you do it, not so great when it's done to you. Just keep playing, man, and if you want a secret, aim for the hull under the turret, that's where the majority of ammunition is stored in all models of T-34.
User avatar #230 - valyn (12/03/2014) [-]
The russkies seem to have some balance issues in both ground forces and planes- it just seems like a lot of awesome stuff is on lower tiers than it should be. Though the planes i instantly stopped having trouble with after i started playing realistic matches- outside of arcade mode all those cannon-heavy armaments on the russian planes are inaccurate and run out of ammo instantly
User avatar #232 - trostell (12/03/2014) [-]
This actually is reflective of early-war Soviet tanks. The T-34 was slightly more effective than the Panzer III and early model Panzer IVs, but the heavy tanks were where the Soviets truly shined early-war. No German gun could penetrate the armor on a KV-1 or KV-2, and, though the KV-1's gun was subpar, being the same one on the T-34s, it was capable of slugging with even the newest Panzer IVs up until it was phased out by the IS, even being upgraded to an 85 mm cannon more capable of killing the German tanks who were now mounting bolt-on armor as added protection. The KV-2's massive 152mm anti-bunker howitzer was ineffective except as a terror weapon, and infantry suppression, but was still, nonetheless, another powerful example of armor trumping armament. If you were one of the lucky few to get the Panzerkampfwagen M4 748, the captured Sherman, you have nothing to fear from Russian tanks. If not, hit them in the side armor, as their frontal armor is typically tricky to penetrate. I suggest loading up the Russian tanks you typically fight in the research preview, and use the hitbox viewmode to find weaker spots to aim at.
User avatar #233 - valyn (12/03/2014) [-]
Ya know, i hadnt thought of that. Thats definitely happening next time i get on War Thunder.

I always aim for the viewport, but it never really does much good. I seem to only be able to score kills at like 300 meters or less in my Stug 3 (the one with the 75mm gun) while they can pick me off from a mile away
User avatar #101 - ishallsmiteyou (12/02/2014) [-]
Pz. III tends to deal with them all right, I use the first second tier one and I can deal with most of the Rooskie tanks. Get some good speed going, preferably max, drift around behind them and get a shot off on the engine and one on the turret, then keep them in a ring. Works every time.

A stug 3 only has around 80mm of pen anyway. Go for lower tier tanks only. don't play lelcade. The Damage models are even more shit[
